Is The European Union A Military Alliance

Why did european nations form alliances?

G'day Skilledout3,

Thank you for your question.

They formed alliances for both offensive and defensive reasons. They wanted to have military support for possible claims of the land of other countries and for protection against enemies.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Should European nations form their own military alliance and leave NATO?

There are two parts to this question.Should the European nations form their own military alliance? They already have. Article 42 (7) of the treaty of the European Union states:If a Member State is the victim of armed aggression on its territory, the other Member States shall have towards it an obligation of aid and assistance by all the means in their power, in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. This shall not prejudice the specific character of the security and defence policy of certain Member States. That is a defensive alliance. If any member of the EU is attacked - all other members of the EU are bound to provide assistance by all means in their power. This is very similar to the way NATO was originally setup as a defensive alliance. What is more this has in fact resulted in common investment by the EU members into the formation of several military structures for instance:EU Battlegroups - through rotation by forces of the member states there are always two EU Battlegroups ready for deployment - the strength of each battlegroup is generally from 1500–2500 men and is composed by units of at least two different member states.Part of the common security and defense policy of the EU is posited on their ability to mobilize and interestingly since Brexit has been announced there has been a renewed interest in strengthening the mechanisms through which common EU military assets could be mobilized (e.g. the European Maritime Force). In practice there has never been an intervention by EU forces outside the framework of NATO so far, so it is something that is not very visible, but the legal and political basis for it exists, the question is whether there is also the will to use it when needed. The interesting part is that even within this framework it has not led to the leaving of NATO, and why should it? The goals of both organizations are not at odds, and through the EU common security and defense policy capable armies which are not part of NATO are also involved such as Sweden, Finland and Austria.

What is the European alliance called?

European Union

What are the military goals of the European Union?

Right now, none. The EU is not a military alliance and it does not need to be, as most of its members are also NATO members. Unless the member states give the EU military powers, it will not have any military goals. There have been occasional talks about possibly moving towards a common European military for a while, but the idea is not particularly popular - as noted, most members are already part of a military alliance.

Can the European Union declare war?

no. tehre is no common eu foreign policy. tehhy are working towards it. but teh divide is between britain and teh rest of the union. britain is a trojan horse for american diplomacy, thus teh eu cant do anything in unison as britain vetoes everything. just leave the eu already, we would do much better without you.

it seems uk people are findingit hard to accept that soon we will eb a united states of europe, which everyone in mainland europe wants. but no, teh people of the small wet island that is britain want to stay in teh euu but at teh same time dont want to eb involved. wake up, its caleld teh UNION for a reason.

What was the name of the alliances established by european communist nations in response to NATO?

When Stalin died in 1953 there was a ‘thaw’ in relations between the superpowers, but when West Germany joined NATO in 1955, Soviet fears were revived. The Warsaw Pact of 1955 was a military alliance controlled by the Soviet Union made up of all the communist Eastern European countries. This was the USSR’s response to NATO. Europe was now divided economically, politically and militarily into two armed gangs of hostile opponents.

Is Shanghai Cooperation Organization a military alliance sort of like NATO or is it something else?

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is not a free trade zone like NAFTA or EU.The primary stated purpose is cooperation in antiterrorism helping the Central Asian states. A secondary consequence is preventing any need for such assistance from the US.There have been some joint exercises of conventional military, but this has not been huge. Russia’s and China’s possible conflicts are at opposite ends of Eurasia and have little to do with each other.

What are the current military alliances in the world, like NATO?

Here is a map of the alliances which stipulates an attack on any member will be an attack on all. There are a vast host of international security treaties and co-operations, however these are the ones which in theory would guarantee a collective war.I also didn’t count bilateral agreements.

The NAFTA and the european union both seek to expand trade within their organizations by?

Whoa! that's a tuffy budd!

Will Europe still have the UK as the main military ally after Brexit, especially if Europe is threatened, or will they be all for themselves?

Does ANYONE on Quora understand the differences between things like Europe, the EU and NATO? Obviously lots do and reply to this kind of question. So apologies to them for the minor rant.Look, the EU is not a military alliance. Nor is it Europe. The US is not in the EU and is still an ally of the UK and ‘Europe’. It would be fair to say that a ‘bad’ Brexit might negatively affect political relationships between the UK and Europe. Actually, of course, some of Russia is part of Europe, so not really a great ally anyway….So, just to get things straight.Europe is a continent, not a government or trade alliance or military alliance. Some of the countries in Europe belong to a basically trade alliance called the EU. Not all of Europe belongs. The military alliance that many European countries belong to is called NATO. Not all of the countries in NATO are in Europe, for example the US and Canada are NOT in Europe but ARE in NATO. They are not in the EU either. Not all EU countries are in NATO. Some European countries that are in NATO are not in the EU. As an example, Turkey is partly in Europe, is not in the EU, and is in NATO. And countries like Russia and the Ukraine are in Europe (or partly in Europe) but aren’t in either the EU or NATO.So, to answer the original question:The UK and some parts of Europe will continue to be ‘allies’ after Brexit while other parts of Europe will be neutral and other parts looked on as ‘enemies’.
