Are there, at most, two standout tracks on The Beatles Yellow Submarine album?

Hi.For my money, yes…I presume you're referring to the original release and not the beefed up cd.Side one is The Beatles, side two…a bunch of orchestral stuff by George Martin.The Martin side can be described as standard soundtrack fare…it fits the film fine but as a stand alone listening experience…er…let's just say most Beatle fans have heard it two, maybe three times…(maybe more, by accident).The Beatles side has two previously released songs and while I suppose you could call them the standout tracks that would kinda be cheating.That leaves the new songs and to my mind there are two standouts, one decent cut and one dud.The dud is “Only A Northern Song", a melange of sound effects and deliberately played out of tune notes and lyrics that were a joke (literally) about being published by Northern Songs Publishing. For a song that's supposed to be a joke, it's not much fun.The decent cut is “It's All Too Much". A better stab at Psychedelia by George. John and Paul sound motivated, energized even…on a Harrison tune, no less. And Ringo doesn't sound completely lost…like he does on “Northern Song”…the song's big drawback is it's length.That leaves (no suspense here, sorry) the two standouts…for me, anyway:“Hey Bulldog"…one of Yoko's more positive contributions to the group…suggesting that they should try out different rhythms, John went to a piano and pounded out the main riff.The recording is tight, powerful and energetic. Ringo is drumming hard…the solo is George…John and Paul are trying to outsing each other and their vocal interplay at the end is priceless.“All Together Now” is the sleeper and a weird one…it's The Beatles gone Monkees. Essentially a children's singalong with slightly subversive lyrics (very Monkees), it seems a bit off for The Beatles. But once again it's the recording that saves this piece with everyone giving it their all…and the rushing tempo at the end shows that you can be out of tune if you are having fun.Cheers and Happy Holidays.
