You can't. Online play is impossible without one of you setting up a server to use or connecting via LAN. Server maps can be replaced with different ones, i.e. the world you want to play on, so you and your friends can use that world as the server. EDIT: Like I said, it is IMPOSSIBLE to play with your friends without setting up LAN or someone setting up a server. You can all play on the same world by sharing the world file, but you can not play together.

Singleplayer I used to play a ton. It is good for making things, but you just get lonely after a while :P. Plus, there's so many fun things to do on servers, such as the shotbow network or the mineplex server.
