What does a Harvard University application require (music department)?

This may sound snarky, but if you want to know the process or criteria for admission to any university or department thereof, LOOK AT THEIR WEBSITE!!! Someone spent time and money creating a platform to answer your questions: use it!If you need additional information or clarification, email or call the admissions officer who reads the apps from your area. This information is posted on the website, too.Everyday there are multiple posts asking the same routine questions about college admission, usually regarding an Ivy or Tier One university. I’ll repeat myself by saying that if you are too lazy to find answers to your questions you are too lazy to do the work at a top school. By now you should know how to do the most basic research.Consultants and experienced others can answer individual thorny problems, or guide your submissions, not be a short cut to assurance that you are worthy of admission to a particular institution.

Music course at Cambridge University?

All entry requirements for studying at Cambridge are clearly stated on their website - I'd suggest starting there.

If you want to study music (at a serious level), consider the royal school of music in London.

How can I go to college/university when I'm in grade 9-10 in Canada? I think I'm going to choose music production for my major.

I know for a fact that at least to apply for Berklee, you need proof of graduation along with your high school transcripts. As long as you complete high school, you can apply to music schools across the country. If you plan on applying in Canada, I assume it must be similar to how it is here in the U.S. Also, to apply for a production major in Berklee, you need to get into Berklee first and then apply for the major and see if you get in. MP&E (Music production) is the most highly requested major so only 1/2 the people who apply for the major get in. Work on some demos, have a good GPA, and of course, be hardworking.

How does one become a professor in music at a university?

There seems to be some confusion over the different qualifications generally necessary for the different music professorships.Performance: Usually fame and highly visible professional accomplishments are valued over specific academic credentials. There are many phenomenal faculty members, even department chairs, who only have a four-year BM. Masters of Music, Graduate Dipolmas, and/or Artist Diplomas are commonly seen among performance faculty too. Some universities offer a DMA in specific instrumental studies such as piano, violin, oboe, or historical performance. The biggest difference here is that those earning the DMA often hope to transition directly into a faculty position without significant experience in professional orchestras, chamber ensembles, and as soloists. Composition: The doctorate in composition is a fairly new degree in the United States, as it was established after WWII to train composers to the same rigorous academic standards as other Ph.D. fields. Until this point, a MM was the norm along with a high level of prior professional recognition. After a few decades of graduating Ph.D. (or the equivalent DMA) composers entering the workforce, the norm today is certainly a composition doctorate in order to teach at a university. Yes, there are still a few very notable names who only have a MM, but overall due to the competition for faculty spots a doctorate is necessary. Music Theory: A Ph.D. in Music Theory is necessary for a full professorship. Occasionally, because Ph.D./DMA composers know a great deal of music theory and the composition professorships are so hard to come by, they will land a music theory professorship. There are adjunct theory instructors with only a MA, but even that is rare. Music History/Musicology: Again, a Ph.D. is necessary just as it would be for any other professorship in history or anthropology at a respected US university. Please note: as with any other field, there are always exceptions for extreme cases, mostly for incredibly famous individuals who have already made a significant impact in the field without a terminal degree.

How do you pick a good college music program?

My 16-year-old son is a gifted and accomplished musician, and a straight A student (a 4.6 GPA). We need to start looking at colleges, and we're not sure what to focus on. The music program's reputation? The college's reputation? The strength of the supporting programs (like a dual major with teaching, for example)? He doesn't want to go to a conservatory, because he'd rather get a bachelor's degree, and eventually a master's. We're open for any advice about colleges at this point. What college would you send your son to and/or how do you go about selecting it?
PS: At this point, let's assume all things are considered equal tuition and scholarship-wise.

Transferring to USC without language requirements?

Grade and Course Requirements for Transfer Applicants

If fewer than 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of college-level work have been attempted, then the applicant must meet both transfer and freshman entrance requirements. Transfer applicants from regionally accredited colleges and universities must have at least a cumulative 2.25 grade-point average on a 4.00 scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0). Several colleges and programs within the University, however, require higher grades than these minimum University entrance standards:

Biology - minimum 2.5 GPA on all college work
Business Administration - minimum 3.0 GPA on all college work and completion of one semester of calculus with a minimum grade of "C"
Cardiovascular Technology - minimum 2.25 GPA if transferring with fewer than 30 semester hours; minimum 2.50 GPA with 30-59 semester hours; 2.75 GPA with 60 semester hours or more
Chemistry - minimum 2.5 GPA on all college work
Computer Information Systems or Computer Science Majors- minimum 2.75 GPA on all college work

I believe so...you can just take them when you get there:-)

Do the US universities consider the theory and practical exams of Trinity College of Music?

Being in Australia, when wanting to enter a University, majoring in Music, you are required to have at least 5th Grade Theory and at least 5th Grade (or possibly above 5th Grade in Music) to enter. You are also required to Audition prior to being accepted into the University itself and the piece (or pieces) of music you will be performing will need to certainly be higher than 6th or 7th Grade (7th with selective Universities). In saying this, I believe it is depending on what Music & Theory qualifications you have or have achieved if you are wanting to attend a US University and would only be guessing on which University you would be applying at as to what criteria they have in accepting prospective students for a place.Below, are two (2) questions on Quora which I had found with a few answers which may help in answering your question. Are trinity college music diplomas worth it?Is Royal College of Music or Trinity College of Music good?

How much do music courses count in my GPA and college selection?

Those are weighted less than core courses such as math, science, english, and history. However, B’s are still B’s, and the more you get, the less likely your chances of getting in. In this day and age, the competition is fierce, so getting good grades across the board should always be a priority. Take easier courses if you are getting B’s.

How to Get into Trinity College Dublin, Ireland?

1) If you are interested in studying it Ireland, don't restrict yourself to just trinity. It is a fine university but there are many others that are all of a very high caliber, that all have a very long and presitgious history), plus in cities less expensive than Dublin
For example
National University of Ireland, Galway (founded 1845) Fabulous university, in a fabulous city, and if you are into music and the arts, Galway is one of the most vibrant cultural cities in Ireland
National University of Ireland, Maynooth (origins traced back to 1795)
University College Cork (Founded 1845)
University College Dublin (Founded 1854)

University of Limerick is newer university established this century, but of very good quality as well.

There is also Queen's university(founded in 1845) and, the modern University of Ulster, in the north of Ireland.

A standard undergraduate degree in Ireland is 3 years in length, and most masters are 1 year.

One alternative is to study your undergrad in the US, and do the masters in Ireland.
or even to study your undergrad in one Irish university, and your Masters in another, to be able to broaden your Irish experience.

FEES
Yes you will have to pay foreign fees which are about 15k Euro (just a guess, I think they are about treble the domestic fees) to attend an Irish university. For this reason foreign students are actually very welcome in the universities, as they are good sources of incomes.

STUDENT VISA
Will allow you to work 20 hours a week while studying, the economy is bad at the moment, but hopefully will be better by the time you graduate from High school the economy will have improved.

I know that there are some scholarships available to study in Ireland such as the

I'm sure there are others, but you'll have to do the research yourself.

What is a college level 'Music Appreciation' class?

I have to fill up 3 more credit hours (I will be a Sr. and I just need to take credit classes b/c I have all my majors.) I go to a smaller university and there are limited classes to take. I was thinking about music appreciation but I know nothing about music. I don't know how to read music either. What cirriculum is a standard (intro) music appreciation class?
