My 14 Year Old Shih Tzu Threw Up Twice In The Same Hour

Today I’m bringing a 1-month-old shih tzu pup to my home. How should I take care of it?

4 weeks old is too young. At 8 weeks you should feed them every 6 hours and let the dry puppy food soak in a little hot water to make it soft first for 15 or 20 minutes. Then when it’s not too hot, you can give it to the puppy. You should use the same food that it was getting from the breeder. Any changes will cause diarrhea. Changes of food have to be gradual…over 7 - 10 days, by at first adding just a little of the new food. Then the next day, slightly more, etc. After 3 months old, you can start feeding 3 times daily. At 6 months, you can change to twice daily. Shitzus and other small breeds seem to often vomit yellow bile when their stomach is empty, then they don’t feel well. If yours does that, then avoid too long between feedings. A little snack, or smaller amounts more often is the solution for that. They always need water available. To potty train it, you must do a lot of work. Take it to the place you want it to do its business after every feeding - they usually poop within 5 minutes or so after eating. Also when they first wake up from sleeping, they will usually pee immediately. If they do their business outdoors or on a potty pad or newspapers you have placed for that purpose - praise them..make a big deal of it… That way they will catch on quickly. Don't scold them when they fail - it won't do any good … puppies don't have a lot of control. I also keep a close watch on my pups… if I notice them starting to wander off to a corner or start circling, I grab them up quickly and take them out. If you do the work they will catch on quickly, but if you are not able to be consistent or around all the time, then sometimes they are still not trained at one year. Dogs and most pups instinctively don't pee or poop where they sleep, so crate training (a cage at night) works best until they are potty trained.Puppies need rest time, play time, cuddle time, food and water.

Shih Tzu heaving: sounds like he's coughing up a hair ball?

My shih tzu will have this like heaving spell like he's trying to cough up a hair ball or something. he opens his little mouth and sticks out his tongue, and heaves! it only last for a minute or less, and then he just goes back to doing his puppy thing. he is 11 months old male and lives in a well ventilated apartment. this happens once or twice for the last couple of days. he has an apointment with the vet for shots next week, but should i bump up the appointment? i keep hearing that this is "normal" for short nosed dogs... what do you think?

Shih-tzu has pancreatitis?

I work at a specialty/emergency vet hospital and pancreatitis is one of the most common conditions we see. Although dietary indiscretion (ie table scraps) is one common cause, it also can be idiopathic(unknown cause).
It depends on the severity of the disease and how soon treatments start. Alot of dogs must me hospitalized on IV fluids and lots of good GI medications. But overall, prognosis is good. There are cases so bad that the prognosis is not so great. Just remember that it can happen again so keep up with low fat diet and if you ever see those clinical signs again, get your pup right back to the vet.

My dog is throwing up after eating chocolate ice cream?

Last night my dog jumped up on the counter and ate about a teaspoon and a half of chocolate ice cream (It was my ice cream and I feel so guilty). He threw up twice, about 30-40 minutes apart, it didn't look or smell like chocolate ice cream. He's about 90-100 lbs, and it's been about an hour since he threw up, should I take him to the vet? Is there anything I can do to help him feel better? :(

My dog hasn't peed in 6 hours?

He will be fine. Your lucky that he doesn't have to go every hour or so. But the fact that he hasn't went in a while should make you more aware of the fact that he may have to go soon. It all depends on the individual puppy, some puppies can hold it all night, which is usually more than eight hours.

My dog just ate alot of honey and threw up 3 times....what should I do?

I put a tiny bit of honey on my dogs gums yesterday bc he has been sick and they say that that will help your dog have energy when their sick. Unfortunately, I left it out on the piano...my dog just recently learned how to climb up on the piano so he got it down and ate about 1/4 cup of it when I was in the other room. He is only a year old. He also threw up 3 times after eating it. Do you think he will be ok since he threw some of it up?

Is it bad for my 14 week old puppy to eat chocolate chip cookies?

My 14 week old shih tzu ate some cookies from walmart. They are only a 12 pack and he only ate like 3 but im still a little worried he might get sick, he is 9lbs

Is my shih tzu overweight and am I feeding her the right food?

My beautiful loving little shih tzu is 14.4lbs. I weighed her today. She is a year and 5 months. :)
I feed her Organix or Pristine. she is perfectly healthy but I do not trust doctors or vets at all. I feel like anywhere I go they try to promote some other food to me because they get kick backs or charge me up in other areas.

Anyway, I walk her approximately 5x a week, 60-90 minutes per walk. We run together. I mix her food with chicken breast or salmon and try to feed her approximately 2 cups a day. Im not sure if thats a lot or if she is overweight. Also, is the food I am feeding her decent quality? Organix is organic.

I dont want her to get too big cause I love her and want her to be healthy. <3

thank you for any advice.
