My Cartilage Piercing Is Still Hurting After A Whole Year Help Needed .

Should my cartilage piercing still hurt after a year?

I've have a cartilage piercing for a little over a year now. It still hurts when it gets moved and touched.

When I first got it, I cleaned it three times a day and all the stuff they tell you to do when you get it. I never took it out until a month ago because of a bump I had on the back. Left it out for about 10 minutes then put it back in and it was fine.

Lately however it's really tender. The outside parts are fine although there's a small bump in the back. It's the inside where it hurts, like when the piercing is running though my ear. I clean the earring and my ear before I put my earrings back in and I continue to clean my ear daily.

Is there any reason why it's hurting so much after so long? I'm probably going to go get it checked out from an official person later but I wanted to hear if you had any experience with this before I did go.

Some extra details: I got it done at Claire's with a gun. It's the third time I've had it done up there. First time was perfect but had to take it out due to NJROTC in high school. It got infected and I had to let it heal up. Second time I got it done it got a major infection and I had to take it out and let it heal up again.

Please don't tell me about how bad a gun is to do it up there, shattering cartilage, damaging it, ect. I already know. I would just like some information as if this should still hurt after a year and what could be causing it.

If you need more information, ask and I'll update this! Thank you very much :D

Cartilage piercing still hurting after 15 years?

I got the upper part of my ear pierced when I was 16 which has been about 15 years ago. I had this done with a gun because I did not know any better. The piercing hurt for a long time afterwards and I stopped wearing jewelry because of the pain. I thought the piercing had closed but I tried an earring in it and found that not to be true. It still hurts and is sore. What is the best way to deal with this? Should I get it re-pierced with a needle, it there a way to heal it or keep it from being so sore or should I just forget wearing jewelry in the piercing?

Cartilage piercing STILL hurts after 1 year but I want more piercings?

lol i have 17 ear piercings (if you add up both ears) ranging from 5 - 1 year(s) old and my oldest cartilage piercing STILL gives me trouble now and then. i got my first cartilage one when i was 14 (19 now) to this day some times ill wake up and its red or sore. thats just what happens b/c your cartilage is sensitive. honestly you get used to it to the point where it doesnt even bother you any more, at least i did

even as i type this my industrial (got it over a year ago) is a little sore b/c i changed the bar last night
and i see you said you changed your jewelery to a ring from a barbell and its a smaller width (aka gauge) you actually can put it back in, your just stretching it back to the original width, granted it might hurt alittle, but youll be fine. ive changed all my piercing gauges over the years going from thicker gauges to thinner ones and back to thicker ones again you just get used to it after a while like i said
and honestly if its bothering you that much you can take some pain killers

Cartilage Piercing- Still hurts after 7 yrs. Can I increase it from 22 to 18 or bigger gauge or just repierce?

> Or should I just go to a shop and get it re done with a proper sized needle and jewelery, next to where it is done now?

Yes. Guns are really bad for piercing anything, let alone cartilage, so needle is always the best option.

>*I've always used either 14k gold or silver stud. I want to try using a surgical steel loop, barbell or spiral, but in 18g or bigger.

Gold, silver, stainless steel and acrylic are not suitable jewellery materials for a new/healing piercing. You should only wear implant grade surgical steel at the very least, titanium is the best metal to be pierced with.

> *Originally was kept clean with the ear care stuff they give you, then tried diluted alcohol. neither seemed to help

Both are rubbish and will only strip the piercing of the good bacteria needed to fight infection and heal the piercing and will dry out the skin, which doesn't help things. You need to stick to twice daily sea salt soaks:

Mix 1/4 of a teaspoon of non-iodised sea salt with a mug of boiled water, leave it to cool so it's warm but won't burn you and soak your piercing in the solution until it cools. There is no need to twist or remove the jewellery as the heat from the soak will draw out any bacteria and it will get right through your piercing. Rinse any excess salt left behind with some fresh, clean water.

> *Not my only piecing, my other three do fine with all types of metals. (three earlobe piercings)

Not everyone is allergic to nickel but to be on the safe side titanium is best because it is hypoallergenic and contains no nickel whatsoever. Also, it takes time and exposure to develop an allergy to something so you might not react straight away but you can eventually become allergic to something.

When pierced professionally the gauge is usually at least 16g or 14g, if jewellery is too thin and small the body will view it more like a splinter that it needs to reject as opposed to something it can heal around. It creates a cheesewire effect over time.

Why does my cartilage piercing still hurt?

I got the top of my ears pierced (both sides) around 2 weeks before christmas '08, and they still feel sore a little. I already changed my earrings from what they originally were (i used real diamond studs) I can twist and rotate my earrings like im suppose to but I cant take them out because it hurts (only one ear hurts, the other one is fine.) My ears look fine and I dont have an infection, so why does it still feel sore?

My cartilage piercing still hurts after 3 months?

I got my cartilage pierced back in July. It's October now and my piercing still hurts. I got it pierced with a gun. And the other day me and my friend were play fighting over a dollar and she bumped my ear and it hurt really bad. Anyone have an idea on how long this might take. I'm kinda careless with the piercing. I sleep on that side of my face all the time and I twist it and only clean in like twice a week. Will this affect my healing process?

It's been almost a year and my cartilage piercing hasn't healed at all! Help please?

Sometimes cartilage piercings can take two years to heal, but that is unlikely unless you get it infected all the time, constantly are touching it, not cleaning it, stuff like that.

I wouldn't worry about it. Some people just take longer to heal then others. It usually does take a full year to fully heal on most people but a lot of people don't know how to tell when their piercing is healed so they decide to change it early. Most of the time you can change it before it's healed as long as you have had it for a while, but it just makes your ear flare up, get swollen, and maybe infected. So please, I know your tired of waiting, but wait until it's healed.

And STOP the rubbing alcohol!
That Might be why it's taking so long to heal.

Yesyesyes the sea salt soaks thing is actually what's best of all things for your piercing (In my opinion) I wouldn't use tea tree oil unless you have hypertrophic scarring (A bump/bubble that forms around your piercing) Or an infection. It shouldn't be used as a daily cleaner.

It might also be infected, but i think you would have added that icky puss is coming out. If Clear/White/Light Yellow puss is coming out, that's normal and a sign of healing. If smelly/gooey/thick/green/dark red/blood/brown/basically any dark colors are coming out, it's infected.
If it sounds infected, sea salt soaks can get rid of that too.

Whatever you do, don't bug it, treat it like it's new (even though it is far from new) Don't Change It, and stop cleaning with rubbing alcohol.

If you have any more questions feel free to e-mail me.

Cartilage piercing still hurts after 9 months?

Hi, I've gotten a double cartilage piercing done at a tattoo shop (so w/ a needle). It's been infected before but that's gone. I usually clean it pretty often. I'm still too scared to leave it without an earring bc it might close up.

My trouble is my top cartilage still hurts when I twist my earrings or touch it. It used to not hurt but now it does. Also, I know it's not infected bc it's not swollen or has pus coming out. It's just really tender and it's weird because my bottom doesn't hurt.

I want to change the earring but I'm not sure where I can find good earrings that won't irritate my ears. (I've already tried Claire's)
