My Dog Ate Part Of A Raw Giblet Bone Will He Be Ok

My dog ate a cooked bone from a spare rib. Will she be OK?

This happened about 3 hours ago. My father fed it to her because he said "I never knew a dog that didn't eat bones"

He didn't know about what dangers there are involved, which made me really frustrated, because he fed her while I was gone.

She seems fine now and she scarfed down the bone but I'm worried if she will be OK. Does anyone know when they will first show signs of anything being wrong?

I've heard of internal bleeding and other things that would happen and I'd expect them to occur rather quickly.

I'm sure this is a longshot, but if anyone knows about this I would appreciate the information. I was worried one time she ate a raw hyde bone but it turned out fine. Any help is really appreciated, thanks.

Can I give the turkey neck and giblets to my dog?

I wasn't going to cook them. And I don't like them. But I am not sure if the neck bones are safe for the dog. I don't want to do the Heimlich on the dog to day.

What will happen if my dog ate a rib bone?

Beef rib bones are one of my dogs staple chews. If my dog were smaller I would not have a problem feeding pork or other smaller rib bones either. They do not splinter unless they are cooked.Dogs have extremely acidic stomachs and melt down bones easily. Bones for wild canines are actually an important part of their diet, providing calcium, phosphorus, amino acids, and a host of other nutrients. They are the best dog chew and commonly misunderstood. You don’t want to feed cooked bones because they get brittle and can splinter. The chances are still better that nothing will happen, but it certainly isn’t worth risking. If he is acting normally than I am sure he is fine. Once safely swallowed, any bone, raw or cooked, will be easily digested.

Can dogs eat the giblets that are in the turkey?

I don't know why people are saying yes to your question - giblets, especially the neck portion, have tiny little bones in them that are very sharp and these can get lodged in your dogs intestines and cause no end of aggro! You should never, ever give your dog bones of any kind, they are dangerous for them but the other bits of the giblet are ok if cooked thoroughly and then mixed with plain boiled rice as a treat. Incidentally, turkey meat and dogs do not mix! I'm telling you that so that you're not clearing up runny, smelly poo all over Christmas! It happened to me years ago and ruined my day, and the next and the next ha ha, wasn't a ball for my dog either to be fair so i'd avoid it if i were you. If you feel guilty do what i do, give him/her a lovely big Jumbone ( artificial bone from leading pet shops and supermarkets ) whilst everyone else is gorging themselves on the bird!

Is it ok to give dogs turkey liver and giblets(cooked)?

i am wondering the same thing. i have the neck and giblets sitting in my fridge ready to boil for her. but i think it would be okay raw or cooked, it's your preference. if the dog caught the turkey he/she wouldn't cook it first, they would eat it raw. however if you are concerned with food borne illness or if you are like me don't want to touch raw meat then boil it first. good luck! and good eats! =D

Should I be concerned if my dog ate a pork bone?

It depends on a few things. How big was the bone? Was it swallowed whole or did your dog gnaw it to bits first? The two main hazards to your dog are choking (and I’m pretty sure you’d know if your dog was choking by now) and intestinal blockages as chunks of the bone get hung up in the dog’s digestive system. If your dog chewed the bone up first, you’re probably in the clear. However, if in the next 24 hours or so, your dog starts acting as if they’re in pain, refuses to eat, begins drooling excessively, won’t urinate or defecate, or has swelling in their abdomen, act fast. Take your dog to the vet right away, do not delay. These are the signs of a blockage or bloat, and either of these can be fatal.Hopefully your dog is going to be just fine and you have nothing to worry about. Good luck!

Is it safe to feed the giblets to your cat?

Karen M,

Hi there! I am sure your kitties will love you for that! In fact, if you freeze the giblets, heart and liver, and thoroughly wash it when it thaws, cutting it up into small pieces, you can feed it raw. That is totally up to you, but either cooked or raw, your cats will adore you!

Just make certain to give a small amount at a time especially if raw so as not to upset their delicate digestive system.

They need a Thanksgiving treat also!

Our cats love to chew on the raw neck bones also. They play with them and stalk them, and chew them to bits. The neck bones are safe for them as long as they are not cooked.

Enjoy watching your cat enjoying him or herself:)

What can you do if a dog swallows a rib bone?

Well biologically, they are designed to eat bones and digest them quickly, the problem is the diet ppl feed their dogs now days, kibble, has caused their natural ability to be able to digest them quickly, not function the way they are intended. If it was a cooked rib bone, I may worry about splinters of the bone getting caught in the digestive tract and causing lesions and other maybe more extreme issues. I'd it was a raw bone, you will PROBABLY be ok and the most that will happen is the dog will poop out the remaining bone that did not get digested if there is any. But I would personally take it to a vet to have it x-rayed and find out where it's at and If surgery is needed. It's a chance you'd be taking that it could get lodged in its system if you don't. To get your dog to stay away from eating things like that, you may want to consider giving it a better food, one that satisfies it's urge to eat those kind of things. A raw dirty or at least raw trays like a raw bone, or deer antlers, or raw meat... Not grocery store near... That's my opinion from facts I've learned, but dog food like Stella and chewys or natures variety instinct raw, or primal raw, etc, are some things you could switch your dog to to give the dog the protein it's craving.

What should I do if my dog swallowed a pork bone?

Dogs eating a raw diet eat bone every day. But that is an uncooked meat covered bone well chewed. So…If swallowed whole there could be problems so see a vet.If cooked it is more likely to splinter and can get stuck in gums or hurt internally. I would check the gums and then keep a close eye on your dog. Personally I would add pumpkin to their food. If there is any concerning sign like a change in energy, not eating or drinking like normal or in general just a little off I would go the vet.If raw I would be concerned adding a regular kibble to the tummy mix. In feeding a raw diet the bone is just part of the dietary needs. Dogs that eat raw get plenty of meat and organ to balance the bone. Not enough bone you would deal with wet poops. Too much bone and can get constipated. So there is a balance. If you only eat kibble I personally would give a little meat or add a spoon of pumpkin and plenty of water. Again, if dog just seems off, I would check with a vet.

Can I give my cats cooked chicken bones?

Giving a cat the whole cooked bone is a bad idea. The shaft of the bone will splinter and can be very dangerous for a cat. But, my mom used to have a technique that worked well for her and the cat. After she had eaten her chicken,if she had a leg bone or wing bone with gristle on the end, she would hold it so the cat could gnaw at the end of the bone. Minou (the cat) enjoyed the treat, and my mom never let go of the bone, so the cat didn’t risk swallowing splinters. Minou also frequently got the giblets, diced small and cooked in some water to make broth. She enjoyed that as well.
