My Kitty Ate A Glow Stick What Do I Do

My cat bit a glow stick help !!!?

The active ingredient in glow sticks, dibutyl phthalate, is not very toxic. It can cause some alarming signs such as drooling, hyperactivity, agitation and possibly aggressive behavior. Generally, the signs are caused by the bad taste of the liquid and last only a few minutes after biting into the stick.

Treatment is aimed at diluting the taste by offering water, a small amount of milk, tuna water, chicken broth, canned food, etc. Liquid on the skin or fur can be washed off with soap or shampoo and water. This helps avoid further glow fluid from being eaten when the cat licks itself.

Cat eating a glow stick?

God I really hope this is some kind of sick sick sick joke.

Yes, he could die.

You need to take him to the veterinarian IMMEDIATELY. That stuff is toxic to humans, what makes you think it wouldn't be for a much smaller animal like a cat?!

You need to find the nearest emergency vet (or call your vets office and have him paged) and explain what has happened, then take your cat there. He will need to be treated for poisoning immediately.

Edit: What the hell, you say omg chill after posting a question like this? Maybe somebody should feed you a glowstick then tell you to chill!

My cat chewed on a glow stick !!!!?

Hi,
Here's hoping everything turns out well for your kitty...
The good news is that the stuff inside the glo-stick is relatively non-toxic. The primary luminescent agent is dibutyl phthalate (n-butyl phthalate), an oily liquid that is also used as a plasticizer and insect repellent. Dibutyl phthalate is of relatively low toxicity and these products contain small amounts. Cats like to bite into the glo-sticks or jewelry. The extremely bitter taste of dibutyl phthalate causes profuse salivation and foaming, with occasional retching and/or vomiting. Signs generally occur within seconds of the cat biting into the item. The salivation and retching from these items are generally self-limiting and should resolve once the cat gets the taste of the product out of its mouth. Should this happen again, you can offer milk or highly palatable food (e.g. canned tuna). Put the kitty in the dark so you can see any other chemical that has gotten on the cat and wash it off with soap and water to prevent re-exposure from grooming.

Now, it sounds as if your cat swallowed the whole bracelet. I'm not sure of the plastic that the bracelet is made out of. It may dissolve in the stomach over time, in which case the chemical may cause her to start vomiting. It could potentially become lodged in the intestines, which would also cause vomiting and/or diarrhea.

I would watch her carefully over the next few days and try to find some money to take her in for an exam and x-rays if she starts vomiting and doesn't improve in a few hours...this is what i found for you:)

My cat broke a glow stick in its mouth?

Call your vet or emergency vet clinic (holiday tomorrow) . Better safe than sorry so ask questions and make an appointment for her to come in ASAP just to be safe. This is a warning to make sure to remove anything that your cat will chew on so as to avoid this happening again.

Are glow sticks toxic for animals?

yes glow sticks are toxic if you chew on them, but i don't think that you animals will be licking the wall. just clean it up with some all purpose spray and a couple of baby wipes. it should work. if any is on the floor, clean it up with a towel and use the vacuum.

i don't think that if it was splashed on the Wall that it will hurt the pets. not unless some got on the pet. just clean it up, and it should be ok. don't worry about it.

good luck

My cat SWALLOWED liquid from a glow stick! WILL HE DIE? HELP!?

I don't know about glow sticks, but my cat got stung by a bee once and his paw swelled up pretty good. We gave him some childrens benedryl and he started foaming at the mouth. We freaked out and called the vet but they said the cat was doing that because he didn't like the taste and he would be fine.

I doubt your cat ingested much of the substance. I'm sure he'll be fine. You might contact an animal emergency center, they might just tell you.

Help! Dog broke a glow stick and is foaming at the mouth?

For the record, you should always know to call your vet when something comes up regarding your pet.

That aside, your dog should be fine. If she is foaming at the mouth due to the taste, she probably didn't ingest a lot since it tasted bad to her. Make sure she drinks lots of liquid and watch her for any signs of sickness (vomiting, diarrhea, etc). She may be a little sick tonight, but if it goes on for more than a day, call your vet.

And for those who think I don't know what I'm talking about - the inside contains hydrogen peroxide (which people give to pets to induce vomiting), and phenol - which requires a large amount of ingestion to be fatal. And there's not a lot of it in a tube.
