What are the positive and negative effects of imperialism in the Philippines?
I work with Filipino's from Manila every day. We provide a huge amount to their economy. Most live an above standard of living. They are the most respectful people I ever met. The only negative effects I can think of is a market of corruption especially thru middle men and back during WW2 JAPANS Invasion of the islands and the abuses incurred .
Positive and negative of American Imperialism?
Sigh, you've got the negative. Let's try positive. 1. Lead to construction of the Panama Canal. That certainly helped the world economies and benefited people in the region. 2. Lead to the independence of Panama, Philippines and Cuba. Yes, one can quibble about the degree and when it happened. 3. Caused the United States to become a world power. Not a bad thing for the world economy and for us.(Again there are quibbles) 4. Significantly increased transportation and communication facilities (control of world-wide areas need fast transport and communication) 5. The part about the "White Man's Burden" of bringing civilization to the undeveloped areas. Areas did get better sanitation and a higher standard of living. 6. Provided competition for Germany, England, France, Belgium, Italy, and Japan. One thing missed when people push the negatives is that the world's major powers were doing the same thing. 7. Japan was opened to the outside world. Was imperialism "positive"? In today's current culture it isn't. Go back a century and people would sign the praises of it. Consider former conditions and compare those today.
