Power Supply On Dell Optiplex 780 Not Working

Can an EVGA 400N1 400W power supply go into a Dell OptiPlex 990 with a GTX 750 without failing in a day or so?

Depends on which version of the OptiPlex 990 you have. The small form factor (SFF) and ultra small form factor (USFF) use non-standard power supplies which were specifically designed to fit inside those small PCs so standard PSUs won’t fit. Only the desktop (DT) and mini-tower (MT) variants can support PSU upgrades.Check section 16 of the manual for more informationSupport for OptiPlex 990 - Manuals & documents

Will this GPU fit in a Dell Optiplex 780 with the stock power supply?

Yes, this will work fine. I have the DDR5 version of this card and it is adequate. The DDR3 version in your link is not a very good choice of graphics card, however, especially given the $70 price tag.I would highly recommend something like a Radeon HD 8570 for around $25 on ebay as a much better alternative for less than half the price. If you want the GT730 for either the HDMI or VGA, you can get adapters for the Radeon card to make it work with VGA or HDMI. If you are wondering simply about power consumption, these cards all use only about 30W and so are basically negligible in their power demands.

What psu and gpu for dell optiplex 780?

Questions about the Dell Optiplex 780 get asked on a daily basis. Too many retailers selling refurbed 780 and people come out here asking about what they can upgrade.

The Core 2 CPU was great 8-10 years ago but now the Core i7 and Core i5 would run circles around it. Because the Core 2 line lacks Hyperthreading, those old Core 2 processors resemble the Core i5 for the quad core and they resemble the Celeron for the dual core. However the efficiency of a modern Core i5 and Celeron is off the charts when compared to the Core 2 processors.

Because of this, the best card you can get, that the Core 2 CPU won't bottleneck is the GTX 1050ti.

If your system has a 300w power supply then you need not worry about upgrading the power supply.

The minitower should be able to house a regular sized card. The SFF Optiplex 780 can only house a SFF card like the GT 1030.

If youre just going to play Minecraft, CS:GO, and watch videos, the GT 1030 is a good choice because it only uses 35w.

Nvidia GT 240 on Dell Optiplex 780 Tower?

Hi evan,

While choosing a video card, you need to keep three things in mind:

1. Connector availability on the motherboard to install the video card. The latest and prevalent video card connector is PCI Express x16.
2. Chassis form factor. This will decide if you would need a Full-Height card or a Low Profile card.
3. Power Supply. Ensure that the power supply meets the minimum requirements of the video card.

Keeping these three things in mind, you may choose a video card for your system.

As your system has a 305 Watt power supply, it seems that you have a Mini Tower. A Mini Tower has a PCI Express x16 slot and can accommodate a full height card. The minimum power supply requirement for Nvidia GT 240 is 300 W. This video card should work with the system.

Hope this helps.

Dell Optiplex 780 PSU replacement?

Hello,
I have a Dell optiplex 780 which comes with a 305W Power supply unit. This is not enough to run my new GPU and also does not have extra power connectors. Can i replace it with any other PSU for example with a gigabyte GreenMax Plus 450W ? I've heard that Dell motherboards to not use standard power connectors or etc. Will be waiting for response.
