Living in Japan for 3 months? help!?

Im planning on going to japan next summer, but i need to start preparing now. i hardly know any japanese, but i think i know enough to get by, im trying to learn as much as i can before going.

but thats not my question, what i want to know is what all i need to have to be over there for that long, asides from money and a passport. like, where can i live for that long. staying in a hotel for 3 months is to expensive(i think) and how would i get money over there, do atms over there work with my bank over here? im so confused its insane. if anyone has some tips on living in a foreign country for a while. please let me know.
