Why didn't radar detect the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor?
The story of radar and the attack on Pearl Harbor is quite instructive. There were extensive public Congressional hearings on this so you can find the original documentation online now but in 1942 is was hushed up. Generally like much of the events leading up to Pearl Harbor these were swept under the rug as not wise to publish.The US Army shipped 4 radar units to Oahu in May 1941.Three were set up looking north and on on Diamond Head. The specs on these units were much better than Chain Home.Although they were essentially plug and play units 6 months later in December they were still ‘experimental’.The US Army was well acquainted with the RAF system of radar and fighter command and should have known that what was needed was a system of launching fighters immediately and vectoring them to intercept. There had been some exercises in Oahu to this effect but this entire system, which in South ,England would have been thousands of persons, on December 7 was one junior lieutenant on his second day on the job. He was chosen because in fact the whole system was supposed to be turned OFF at 0700.Turned OFF? Yes, in spite of a known Japanese invasion of Malaysia the Hawaiian Command instructed the stations to shut down after daybreak.In spite of these instructions one unit, probably the second best positioned to detect the attack, which was run by 2 privates remained on and did detect the attack and called it in probably in time, if there was a fighter command set up which there was not, to launch a fighter defense that should have shattered the attack. As it was the decision fell to a Lieutenant of the Signal Corp with no aviation experience who apparently did not ask which direction the signal was coming from nor did he stay on the line to hear that the signal was described as impossibly big.But to publicize this dereliction , as well as the known attack on Malaysia and the of course any secret intel would have diminished the “Day of Infamy” story.Also the Navy had both cruisers and battleships with new radar units sitting in Pearl with the radar turned off (surrounded by mountains to the north they would not have worked well in harbor) instead of leaving some at sea as a picket line.
