Taking A Semester Off College Any Tips

Taking a semester off in college?

Since you already filed the FAFSA for the entire school year (2008-2009), you will not have to refile your FAFSA for the spring semester. You will have to drop all of your classes that you are currently enrolled in, which means that you will either have to do this online and then it will be updated in the registrar's office, or you will have to go into the registrar's office in person and file the paper work to drop all of your classes. Any award amounts that were listed for Fall Semester will just be removed from your full financial aid package and that money will then be awarded to somebody else in need. You will not have to owe this money back, because you simply will not receive this portion to begin with.

As long as you are not away from college for more than 6 months, you will not have to start paying back on your loans. You will be in your grace period. If however, you do not go back in the Spring (January) Semester, that will put you over 6 months and then yes, you will have to start paying back on all of it.

Is it okay to take a semester off college?

Nearly everyone I know (including myself) who took a year or a semester off, either never went back, or did not return to college for several years. I was just going to take a year off, and I ended up taking 9 years off. I don’t regret it because some of the things I got to experience as an older student, I wasn’t ready for at 18 or 19, and I definitely worked harder and appreciated my education when I went back, but I did feel like I was just starting out when my age peers were already established in careers and families. I would recommend that you decide what your goals are and figure out a plan ahead of time so that you can return after a semester if that is what you chose to do.

Should I take a year or semester off of college?

I am not a big fan of taking a year off college. I find that losing a year causes problems with scheduling. There are changes in courses and prerequisites change. It is just not worth the bother.

On the other hand, your mental health is all important. Stress can be healthy if managed well.

Instead, I would read up on what you can do to handle the stress better. One thing relates to diet. Eat grains (bread, porridge, that sort of thing) for breakfast. Breakfast is important for managing stress. Also, make time for exercise.

Dropping out of college after first semester?

I started college at my local community college in August (fall semester). I struggled the entire time w. depression and ended up failing two classes and being dropped from one, passing only one class with a C. I am set to start Spring semester this Monday but I recently found out I will no longer be receiving Financial Aid because my GPA is under 2.0. I have no job and my family is low income. I have no way of paying for my tuition, books, school supplies, nothing. I've been trying to call the school but could never get through and never had a way to get up there. Now classes start Monday and I have no solutions. I was thinking of just dropping my Spring semester classes, getting a full time job for now (save up), and return in the fall. Does anyone think this is a good idea? I seriously have no other choice as there's no way I can attend school with no funds. I haven't even payed for registration. Also, any tips on how to tell my mom? I still live at home and I know she is going to be extremely pissed off. But there's honestly no other way. Oh, and btw I received Pell Grants as my financial aid if that helps. Will I have to pay that back? All of it? I recieved about $2500 total for fall semester.

Is it a bad idea to take a semester off of college to figure out what i want to do with my life?

Getting through college isn't a race. if you feel like you need some time off, go ahead. It is better to finish school later with the required classes (and smaller bill) than to waste time and money on classes you may not end up needing. Remember to enjoy life, you only get one!

If you take a semester/year off of college, do you have to reapply?

I was wanting to take a year off of college for personal reasons, and I was wondering if I would have to reapply if I did, Im worried that If I did and reapplied I wouldnt be accepted back because my gpa is only about a 2.25
If you do and have to reapply, can they turn you down?

If I take a semester off, am I still enrolled?

You'll have to check with your college for their enrolment rules, but for most you should be fine. I took an entire year off after my first year of university (I even enrolled and went to a second university just to try something different) and then I came back to my original school no problem. I never said anything to them about leaving, etc. Just enrolled in classes again the next year.

Is it good to take a semester off of your second year of college?

It might make it harder to graduate if you are required to take a two part class and you must wait till the following year to take part one. This may cost you more money because you need to reapply and pay fees to be accepted back into the University and they may make you wait another semester.Talk to your student advisor to get all your option on taking a semester off. Perhaps going as a part time student will give you a slight break and be a better option?
