Taking Care Of Rolly Pollies

How can I take care of Pill Bugs? (Rollie Pollies) ?

Roll up a newspaper and wet it down. Then leave it outside over night. You should have rollie pollies in it.

Do this for a few nights and you probably will have enough.

As for care...they eat rotting vegetation and they like moisture.

I guess if you save greens from your vegetables for them, that might work. (Carrot tops, celery tops, etc.) You could also give them damp leaves you find on the ground.

Maybe you could spritz their home once in a while to keep it moist.

You could keep them in a large plastic tub of some sort. I don't think they could climb the walls, so I doubt you would need a lid.

I don't know anything about their breeding habits.

Hope this helps.

Taking care of rolly pollies?

I've gotten my rolly pollies a week ago and I put in moist dirt, leaves, and Apple pieces. It's been a week now and the dirts all clumped up with tiny white things. What are those white things? Are they eggs?

Also how often should I fill in new moist dirt? Since they're pooping everywhere and the dirt isn't as moist as before.

And if those white things are eggs, how am I supposed to clean the dirt then?

And if you have any tips or suggestions about taking care of them let me know! Please don't tell me to throw them out...

How do you take care of pill bugs (rolly pollies)?

remember they are not insects..they are related to shrimp..crab..lobster so they need a moist environment, but no standing water. Throw in a large piece of lettuce...or slices of squash to feed them, but you want to watch it so it doesn't just turn to a lump of mold. Keep the container out of direct sunlight so it doesn't get too hot for them.

How to take care of Pill bugs (rollie pollies)?

YOU CAN FIND THEM IN VERY DAMP EARTH. THEY ESPECIALLY LOVE TO EAT MY STRAWBERRIES---YOU COULD FIND THEM THERE OR BY ANY WET VEGETATION OR UNDER BRICKS.

I don't know how to keep them alive. They love BEER. If you put beer in a tuna container with the lid off or a cleaned out yogurt cup and fill it with beer. However, this will also kill them if you don't catch them soon enough.

Will salt kill or attract rollie pollies?

I have hundreds of rollie pollies (doodlebugs) inside my house. Someone told me that pouring salt around where they come in will kill them, someone else said salt will attract more, does anyone know what will happen if I use salt on them?

How do you keep rollie pollies alive?

Isopod, Pillbug, Sow Bug Rearing
(Rollie Pollies are the same as the names listed above!)

Isopod, Pillbug, Sow Bug Needs
Rearing Habitat

Clear shoe box, clear plastic container or side resting soda bottle
Lid with small holes for reduced ventilation
1/2-1" of humus or rich, moist soil or sand
Leaf litter, old bark or other dead vegetation
Water spray bottle
A piece of wood or bark
Food
Fish food flakes sprinkled on the soil surface, leaf litter (from where they were collected), pieces of potato, apple, carrot.

Water
The soil needs to be moist, but not soggy. Periodic (maybe daily) misting of container will help increase humidity. Do not allow the soil to dry out or the isopods will die.

Taking Care
Cleaning
If there are many isopods in the container, waste gases may become strong and deadly to the isopods. The soil will need to be replaced. Immature isopods are small and may be difficult to separate from the soil. Hopefully, most of the little isopods will be on the piece of bark or wood. Remove uneaten food and mold as soon as possible.

Handling
The larger species of isopods can be handled and observed easily in one's hand. Gently pick them up between your thumb and forefinger, or scoop with a spoon to separate them from the soil. They are fast walkers and can withstand short drops. Like all arthropods, handling while the animal is molting is discouraged. Immature stages may be more fragile than adults.

Raising Young
If you have both sexes, isopods will reproduce quickly. Eggs and embryos are stored in the female's brood pouch (see Information Sheet). The immature isopods are small and may be buried in the soil underneath the bark or leaf litter.

Other Concerns
Precautions
To discourage excessive mold in the enclosure: 1) Remove and replace moldy food or pieces of bark; 2) Reduce misting; 3) Increase ventilation in lid (or remove for a period of supervised time). If problem persists, create a new clean set-up and follow previous precautions from the beginning.

Special Considerations
Do not mix different species of isopods (i.e. rolly pollies or sowbugs) in the same container. If your rearing is successful, the isopods will become overcrowded and some will need to be released where you found them.
Hope this helped! Good luck!

How do i kill rollie pollies?

I had the same problem when I lived by a lake. I think I used diatomaceous earth. Been a long time. I remember I couldnt find anything anywhere in pest books called roly poly. I found out they're actually called pillbugs or woodlice. That may help you find the e answer. Also, they only came inside (in droves) when the weather was very hot and dry. Maybe you can lure them away from the house with a big wet log or something near the woods at the edge of your lawn. Good luck!

How do i get rid of pill bugs (rollie pollies) . Out of my house..?

Find where they get in they usually live in damp places,
is the house on a slab, or maybe the drainage is not what it should be ie the lower courses of bricks may have soil built up above floor level, like a garden along the wall.
look for dampness, hope it helps. rj

Is a rolly polly or pill bug really a insect?

The more commonly used name is sow bug or wood lice, but they have more than six legs, so they're NOT insects. They are, believe it or not, crustaceans. See the wikipedia link below. The people who said they are insects are very wrong.

My daughter had to catch 20 insects for her class and what she got included wasps, bees, crickets, grasshoppers, butterflies, moths, walking sticks and cicadas.

Also, spiders are not insects, they are arachnids.
