Web Sight For Taughannock Falls In Ithaca Ny

Haunted sites in Ithaca NY?

It's the home of two colleges, Ithaca College, and Cornell University, so it's full of young, sometimes wild, college kids, doing their thing. If you like that as part of your surroundings, you might just fit in perfectly. It's in upstate, and it's a very pretty area, and...Tom Green? Like the Denver Weatherman Tom Green? Or is there another guy out there with the same name?

What are the best hikes in Taughannock Falls State Park?

Both the Rim Trail and the Gorge Trail are spectacular.  The stairs up to the rim of the gorge are tough going at first, but once you are up there, it is a nice level walk --- until you go back down.  The views of the fall are nice, but the views out across Cayuga Lake can be stunning, especially in the fall.  There is also a second waterfall you cannot see from the Gorge Trail. The Gorge Trail is fantastic any time of the year, and it is certainly the easier of the two.  You will see a lot more people on this trail.I always hiked both if I had the time, then walked across the road and wandered along the shore of Cayuga Lake.

Can you swim in Taughannock Falls State Park?

Back in 2000 it was allowed and I have great pictures of a visit there post-swim. But shortly after there was an incident where a woman drowned while swimming there due to unsafe conditions. I wouldn't be surprised if they shut down swimming at the falls. I checked the site and there is no clear indication about swimming but you may want to call to verify. http://www.nysparks.com/parks/62...

What's the best day hike in Ithaca, NY?

You can visit the Taughannock Falls State Park.Taughannock Falls plunges 215 feet past rocky cliffs that tower nearly 400 feet above the gorge. Gorge and rim trails offer spectacular views from above the falls and from below at the end of the gorge trail. Campsites and cabins overlook Cayuga Lake, with marina, boat launch and beach nearby. But make sure you go at the right season. I happened to visit in early fall last year and the area was pretty dried up.You can also visit the Buttermilk Falls which provides views of Cascades, staircases, segmented falls, and plunges. The main falls, or Buttermilk Falls, is 165 ft high, tumbling in a wide, frothy cascade.Best time to visit: Spring, early summer, fall. The park’s trails are closed after November, but Buttermilk Falls is still accessible from the lower parking lot area.

What are fun things to do in Ithaca, NY?

I only lived in Ithaca for a year, but I found plenty of fun things to do.There are three great state parks in the area - Taughannock Falls, Buttermilk Falls, and Treman State Park.  All three of these have extremely pleasant, though not particularly challenging, hikes.  One big upside of these areas is that most of them have at least one trail open even during the winter.  These are probably much more accessible to you if you have a car.I lived near the bottom of south hill, so one of my favorite things to do was to be a huge nerd and go to Autumn Leaves used bookstore on the common.  They have a pretty good turnover of books and it was always fun to go bargain hunting - especially since I had a healthy appetite for nonfiction in addition to fiction. The Ithaca Farmers Market runs from late spring to late autumn.  It's not only a pretty fun place to shop around for knicknacks or specialty groceries, it has some pretty great "street food" type vendors and is right by the lake.  I've spent many a pleasant Saturday afternoon watching ducks and eating cuban black beans by the water.  If you're into biking, there's a century that goes around Cayuga lake, which is quite challenging from all of the hills.  Well, fine, it was challenging for me, it probably rates as middling for any of the hardcore enthusiasts out there.

What is the best way to spend the weekend in Ithaca?

It depends on whether the weekend is in Spring/ Summer/ Fall or in Winter. What you will do depends largely on the weather.Springs and Summers are beautiful. You can take a Winery tour or go for hiking or boat on the lakes. Farmers market is also a good idea in the Summers. Fall is not so bad either and you can walk in Commons and see some local performances.Winters, which span more than 6 months are brutal. You can't do much of outdoors, so your options are limited to Wegmans, local bars or parties in the neighborhood.
