What Are Some Self Harm Alternatives

Self-harm alternatives?

Alternatives to self harm that I have found useful, and I hope you do:
1. Write bad, bad, bad poetry, all about how deep and disturbed and dark your feelings are.
2. Write bad music to accompany said previous bad poetry.
3. Record the above (et voila, one very bad bad bad song).
4. Make an enormous sandwich
5. Eat the enormous sandwich (cut it into tiny pieces first. Vent that aggression on a bit of bread and cheese)
6. Make a tiny plasticine person
7. Give it a name
8. Pull it's head off and impale it by it's crotch with a great big nitting needle.
9. Rather more mundane, but ice cubes are great. Eat them, crunch them, break them up in your hands.
10. Punch the crap out of a pillow
11. Go on yahoo and answer some questions.#
12. Remind yourself that self harm leaves permanent scars that are forever. the feelings that make you want to self harm are just temporary feelings which are there temporarily...
13. Write a list about all the things you're grateful for in life.
14. Run a warm bubble bath
15. Clean the floor, give it a good scrub
Good luck; you've done a huge thing, which is to acknowledge that self harm isn't something you want to do. With terrific willpower, you can overcome this compulsion.

I'm thinking of you and wish you the best of luck.

Alternatives to self harm?!?

I currently self harm, but sometimes I'm unable too like if I'm in a room with nothing to use or family, I won't just go and get something sharp and cut myself, I just end up forgetting it or get distracted but this might not work for you. The butterfly project may help, drawing a butterfly every time you feel the need to cut (if that's what you do or think of doing) on the spot you would cut and name it after someone special to you. If you cut you kill the butterfly, but it it fades then you've succeeded. Listening to music can help, drawing, writing but I don't do any of that. I just tend to forget, after resisting the urge. Or pinch yourself, it's better than doing proper damage but it still can hurt. Sorry if this isn't that helpful but I know what you're going through, hope everything works out :)

What are some alternatives to self harm?

Freedom from Self-Harm is a book by two therapists who treat self-harm and research it, Kim Gratz and Alexander Chapman.

The book is divided into 3 parts. Parts 1 and 2 are Understanding Self-Harm and How to Get Help for Self-Harm.

Part 3 is Coping Strategies for Managing Self-Harm. The chapters are

10. Getting motivated to stop self-harm and increasing your chances of success
11. Coping with self-harm urges
12. Managing emotions related to self-harm
13. Moving forward: living a life without self-harm

The authors recommend getting treatment for self-harm. However, they also say that there's a wide range of treatments. Whereas very serious cases require months of intensive therapy, many people benefit from a program called MACT, which is just a booklet and a few therapy sessions, usually two or three, sometimes just the booklet.

They say that outpatient therapy is generally better than inpatient treatment, because when the idea is learning skills for the real world it's best to learn in the real world.

Freedom from Self-Harm has been endorsed by Marsha Linehan, the psychologist who designed DBT, the one treatment shown to help with borderline personality disorder, a mental illness that has self-injurious behavior as a frequent symptom.

If you go to the Amazon and Goodreads ad for this book. you'll see that readers are very enthusiastic about it.

What is a good alternative to self-harm?

Ignore the ignorant ramblings of those with no business answering in the 'Mental Health' department of YA. (The first two answerers.)

Anyways. When you're losing control of yourself or are triggered and feel the need to cut yourself, a few alternatives that worked for myself and others are as follows:
Use a (washable!) red marker and draw the cuts on yourself instead of actually inflicting them.
Draw yourself covered with cuts.
Write a poem about the need or the act of cutting.
Find a friend or ex-cutter that you can confide in and vent your feelings to.
Or there's the age-old method of snapping a rubberband around your wrist when you feel the urge to cut, but I've found that doesn't usually help.

Alternative self harm methods?

Ive been self harming + cutting myself for a while. I can't bring myself to stop. So as of the time being; are there any alternative's that DO leave a mark? I've thought about using a rubber band but it cuts of circulation. Any alternatives to cutting that DO leave a mark? Thankyou for appropriate answer s
