For men doing Moulin Rouge I'd opt for more the "magician" or "tap dancer" look, its closer to the costumes worn for the movie. Tails jacket, tuxedo shirt (ones you would wear with a bow tie, but skip the bow tie!), clean white cotton gloves, and a top hat (standard not Lincoln height). Your other option would be to go bollywood from the Hindu dance scenes, but you would need a lot of confidence to pull that off at a formal event.
