What Does It Mean When A Chameleon Turns Black

What does it mean when my chameleon turns brown?

Most people believe that chameleons turn color to blend in with their surroundings. This is a very small part of their color changing reasoning. It has more to do with moods. Chameleons will turn brown generally if they are not happy. That could mean it is too warm or not warm enough. Or something is stressing it out. Do you have large animals around such as cats or dogs. This doesn't mean it's angry, just not happy. Especially if it is for a long period of time. It is natural, however make sure the temperatures are pretty constant. Depending on the species, mid 80s on one side of the cage to upper 70s on the other. Chameleons are generally not fond of being sprayed by water. Try searching the internet for a care sheet for your specific chameleon. Good luck!

What dose it mean when my chameleon turns yellow/green with black spots?

Its probably excited as it may be anticipating that you are going to feed it. If the color goes a more uniform dark color than the animal is under stress and you should leave it alone. Make sure to provide some type of dripping water setup or mist leaves in the enclosure you have it in as chameleons won't drink standing water. Also UV light is extremely important for them. Unfiltered sunlight is the best

What do black spots on chameleons mean?

Yes, when chams become dark or get spots they are usually angry or stressed. My senegal chameleon does that when he doesn't want me to touch him. If he's dark all the time, make sure he has enough heat and its humid enough and that he isn't dehydrated.

Do chameleons actually change color to blend with their surroundings?

They do change their colour but it's only partially camouflage, it's mainly for communication. This includes indicating fear and to attract mates. I was lucky enough to find a common chameleon[1] while on Malta so I captured it temporarily and allowed it an escape route onto a branch so it promptly fled after turning almost black from its original green colour. Below is a photo before I disturbed it.Here is after I disturbed it and it's running to the nearest branch.Footnotes[1] Common chameleon - Wikipedia

Why does my pet chameleon keep turning bright red?

When the light hits its skin, the cells act depending on the mood of the chameleon. Crystals would be close together in a neutral state and spread out when the chameleon gets excited. This crystals would reflect out to the epidermis the warm light, changing the chameleons color to yellow.

What do you do when your lizard turns black?

Anoles are actually a subspecies of chameleons. Changing colors is normal for them. A dark change usually signifies stress or cold, but I would seek professional help if he turns black and stays that way for very long! Black is not good, especially in a reptile that does not have the strong color change ability of true chameleon!

Pygmy chameleons egg turned brown!!!?

How long has it been since the eggs were laid? Some reptile eggs will turn colors at certain times in development, but I'm not familiar with chameleon eggs. The best option would be to wait a few days and candle them to make certain that they are fertile, adn then don't worry about it.
Best of luck with your eggs!
