When we were in a taxi, my father once casually said that Papuans are “dark and ugly” when he was talking about eastern Indonesian behavior who are living in the western part. “They're so uncultured but there's nothing we can do about that because they can always use the ‘we are Indonesian too!’ card every time”. Yeah, he is a kind of a jerk.I also once overheard two middle-aged women (If I recall correctly, in a Padang restaurant), which I presume are friends, one is Javanese from her accent and the other is unmistakably eastern Indonesian. While they’re busy chatting to each other a Chinese-Indonesian girl passed in front of them, the Javanese woman then nonchalantly said to her friend “Wow, look at her! She's so pretty and her skin is so white! Unlike you!”, I look at the Papuan woman and her expression looks like she seems to have already used to that kind of comment.And there's also that Facebook post comparing the Papuans to monkeys.There are many other similar cases like these I accidentally stumbled upon, the hidden mockery, the subtle discrimination, the patronizing attitude of the middle class. The persisting stereotype that the Papuan are loud, lazy obnoxious drunkards who involve themselves in shady jobs.I think this is already an indicator that the Papuan are looked down upon by other ethnic groups, the same thing happened to the “orang keling” (Tamil-Indonesian) in Medan who are very dark compared to other average Indonesian, they're usually associated with criminality and low-class jobs, there's even a saying (please correct me if I'm mistaken) that if you meet a snake and “orang keling” on your way, you should kill the “keling” first as they are more dangerous.I only wish things will get better in the future. Papuan independence perhaps? I don't think it's really fair for them to get this kind of treatment when they migrate to the western part of Indonesia.
