What is the meaning of domain registration for website?
Do you mean domain name registration? If yes, users find/know your web site by it's domain name - i.e. yahoo.com. But the Internet only communicates using IP addresses. So in order to make the Internet more user friendly there are devices on the Internet known as domain name servers (DNS). When you try and connect to a site using it's domain name, your computer does a DNS lookup to determine what the IP address is of the website your trying to connect to. If you look at your IP configuration on your PC, one the entries is the DNS. Domain names need to be registered with a DNS service to prevent overlap and to be sure your domain exists in the DNS. Godaddy.com is an example of a DNS registration service. If you don't have a registered domain name, nobody can find your web site unless they know the IP address. If your IP address is dynamic, then nobody could reliably find your web site. Every time your IP changed - you go off the grid.

if somone bought a website name of a rock band's name (say, 'rockband.com') during the early days of the net, how can the band get the site domain name back? is there any kind of law or something that automatically entitles the actual group or artist their name? if so, who would you contact to get the name back?
