What Takes The Place Of Lost Blood In A Donation

Alyx Donation Questiosn?

As you are aware, the Fenwal Alyx collection system allows double red cells to be drawn from donors who meet the FDA minimum body size and hemoglobin/hematocrit requirements. The process replaces lost blood volume with normal saline, while also returning plasma and platelets back to the donor. Collection takes approximately 30 minutes. As an O negative donor, double red cell collection is a very generous way to help maintain blood supplies over the holidays. Following a double red cell, donors must wait a minimum of 112 days before attempting any subsequent blood donations.

You mentioned that you had a sample drawn for possible plasma collection. Are you attempting to donate products at a compensated plasma center or a non-profit volunteer blood center? If you are donating plasma for further manufacturing and/or red cells for testing reagents, then either product would not be used for direct patient use, but rather sent to companies that produce plasma derivatives and/or immunohematology screening tests.

If you are donating at your local blood center, I would encourage you to donate red cells either by Alyx or regular whole blood donation. While the Alyx platform is able to collect simultaneous single red cell and multiple plasma units, type O plasma has limited use in transfusion medicine (type O recipients may receive any plasma type, but type O fresh frozen plasma may only be given to type O recipients). As an O negative, CMV negative donor myself, our red cells are in extreme shortage during the holiday season.

To help prevent potential post-donation reactions (weakness, vasovagal response, etc.), increase your fluid intake before and after any donation, and eat a good meal 2-3 hours before donation.

Thank you for such a generous gift.

How much weight can I lose if I donate blood?

Its 1 pint every 8 weeks. And its almost entirely water weight. You will gain it all back in about 3 days tops. I wouldnt reccomend trying it for weight loss...

Donating Blood , Help please!?

I'm 17, I gave blood for the first time yesterday. they obviously did all the basics like iron, blood pressure, pulse and everything came back perfect. So i get the needle in me, & i'm about halfway through, & first i got a little dizzy, then my vision was going out, & my hearing was going out as well and i was sweating so bad! i also felt as though i was going to puke, my boyfriend told the woman taking my blood, and at that point i could hear but wasn't comprehending. he said i turned white as a ghost especially my lips were discolored. She propped up my feet and continued taking my blood, and i was fine. Why did i almost pass out ? (no it wasn't nerves/fear) & because that happen am i able to give blood again? Also, I was wondering why some people act like it's a bad thing to give blood, and why do they think you shouldn't do it.

* also , the woman made me look the other way when she put the needle in so i didn't get nervous.

Why do we feel weak after donating blood?

Its more of a feeling of "lightness" than weakness. It is caused by the lowered blood sugar to the brain. Your blood sugar has lowered because the amount of blood taken also had a certain amount of blood sugar. Since it is suddenly missing, the body reacts poorly to this loss of sugar.  The symptoms include onset of nausea, headaches, shakiness, paresthesia, hunger, fatigue...and so on. However, to quickly deal with hypoglycemia directly after a substantial loss of blood, sit with your head to your knees (parallel to the floor), as this lowers your brain and facilitates the blood-flow to the brain, allowing more blood sugars to reach it quickly. However, having carbohydrate-rich foods cure this.  It will help normalize the sudden change in blood sugar and will help you feel more normal sooner. The "Weakness" you feel is due to the sudden loss of blood pressure due to the blood loss but the body compensates this loss by retaining fluid in the kidneys by concentrating the urine.

When you donate your blood, how long do you wait till you can give blood again?

At the Red Cross they won't allow you to donate blood again for another 3 months and plasma everyweek (since it uses very little blood). However your body makes more blood cells every 24 hours to sustain the body but it takes a bit longer since they take so much. I believe it takes about 3-5 weeks to regenerate the lost blood. It's just a precaution they have set.

Hope that helps!

I donated 300 ml blood yesterday Second time. I feel weak today. How many days my body would take to recover? What should I eat?

Firstly, congratulations. You just saved a life by donating blood. Your body needs enough proteins, water, iron, vitamins, and minerals for repleneshing the lost blood. For proteins, eggs are the best source of proteins and amino acids. For minerals, vitamins, consume green leafy vegetables and fruits. For iron, consume iron rich foods like spinach. if you live in India, jagree is the best iron rich food. If you feel weakness, theres no need to worry. It is normal to feel weak after donation. When you feel weak, have a glass of water plus glucose powder and lie down for some time. And remember. You should donate blood only once in 3 months. Not more frequently.
