In what year did the U.S. gain Independence?

Yes, we DECLARED independence July 4th, but that is not the answer. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776, but the United States was not 'officially' independent from Great Britain until the Treaty of Paris was signed September 3, 1783 after the American Revolution. We had to win the war first before we could 'GAIN independence.' So the answer is 1783!
