Why does the NFL season start so late and end in the coldest time of the year in the middle of the winter, and who came up with this schedule?
It is a terrible time of year for people who go to the games and sit still for 3 hours watching the game. However, if you look at the players, they are typically doing better than the fans. Running around and exercising makes you warm. If you are a starter, you can put on gloves to protect the hands and move around to raise your core temp.Summer is a different story. With all of those pads and helmets, you can’t help but to get really hot. Next season, notice the uniforms. The (outdoor) home teams in the south will always wear the white jerseys in September forcing the away teams to wear darker jerseys. While it is regrettable, it isn’t uncommon to hear stories of a young kid dying of heat stroke in August at least once every two years. I don’t think I have ever heard of a player dying of hypothermia at a game or practice.

What are some of the greatest in season turnarounds in NFL history?
Yes. The 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers are a fine example. They were 1-4 losing to Oakland Minnesota New England and Cleveland. They even lost quarterback Terry Bradshaw in the process. The rookie Mike Kruzcek took over. They made the biggest comeback in NFL history. They finished 10-4 and only gave up an incredible unbelievable 28 points in 9 weeks on defense. The defense stepped it up due to the inexperienced rookie Kruzcek. They beat Baltimore 40-14 in the playoffs but lost to Oakland in the AFC Championship December 26 1976 24-7. Yes I cannot think off the top of my head a more incredible comeback overall.
