When To Neuter My Puppy

When to neuter Great Pyrenees puppy?

Yes, that is true. A large and giant breed dog should not be fixed until the growth plates close, usually at 18 months of age, your Vet can x-ray the growth plates. Neutering too early causes less bone density, the leg bones may get longer than they normally would, with a large body to support. You will have to be extra cautious with your boy, Pyrs like to roam anyway, and a female in heat would be just the ticket!

Should i neuter my westie puppy ? :(?

Do it now. I waited until my male westie was almost 11mo & wished I had done it sooner. There are no illnesses I know of from not neutering your dog only from not doing the neuter like cancer. It often helps with the marking & the male attitude around other males if done early before maturity. I can tell a difference in the dogs I groom when they were fixed early compared to being fixed as adults or not at all.

Why should I neuter my dog?

Unless you're a professional breeder (let me emphasize: PROFESSIONAL), there is no reason not to neuter your pet. There are so many reasons to neuter, but here are just a few: in many places, neutered pets have lower licensing feesit prevents testicular cancer completely it reduces leg-lifting (spraying urine as a territorial mark)it reduces dominance and aggression in your dog, and also reduces the risk of your male being attacked by other malesit makes for a better pet (a fertile dog will pay more attention to other dogs, because it's looking for a mate. neutered pets will pay more attention to you)it reduces sexual behavior like humping pillows or legs (or other dogs, of course). an unneutered pet may still do those things, but it's easier to train out of them.it reduces the risk of prostate disorders like infections, cysts, and enlarged prostateIT PREVENTS YOUR DOG FROM BREEDING. this is a really big deal. there are too many dogs already, you can see that by going to any shelter. There are some negatives that go with neutering, but they definitely don't outweigh the positives. Neutered pets are more likely to become overweight, but it's your job to feed your pet responsibly.  Also, if a dog is neutered too young, it can increase the risk of hip dysplasia, bone cancer, and uneven leg growth (because the growth hormones are necessary at a young age). But good vets know the right age to neuter for all different breeds and sizes of dogs. The moral: please, please, neuter your pet.

When is the best time to neuter my Havanese puppy? I was thinking almost 6 mo. my breeder says not before 7 mo?

Puppies can be spayed/neutered any time after eight weeks of age. Some people wait until just before the dog becomes sexually mature, sometime around six months of age, depending on the breed.

Is it safe for my puppy with a heart murmur to get neutered next week?

A heart murmur occurs when there is a turbulence to the normal flow of blood through the chambers of the heart. Sometimes it is so subtle as to be barely detectable with a stethoscope, while other times it is so loud that it can actually be felt by touching the chest wall. Although some murmurs are innocent, especially in young dogs, most indicate some problem.

The two main causes of a murmur are severe anemia and incomplete closing of the heart valves. The anemia related murmur is not as common as the heart valve problem. The valve related murmur is found most often in young animals with a congenital heart problem, or in older pets with incomplete valve closure due to thickening of the heart valves. Sometimes the valve have a problem because they have a bacterial infection. One common source of this bacteria infection is dental disease.

A normal heart has a lub-dub sound, which comes from the valves as they close

If the vet has said it is ok to go ahead with the desexing etc, I can guarantee you it MUST be ook, there is no way a vet would even consider risking it if the dog was not well enough. I do suggest you talk to him about your concerns, as no one on here knows the dog and is no position to talk you out of it with their own unfortunate experiences.

Newfoundland puppy neutered to soon?

Congrats on your puppy and do not second guess yourself. It is obvious you care, and obvious you're trying so you are a good pet parent.

As far as the neuter there are mixed ideas and research on this subject. You will find studies and information on both side. My personal opinion is to wait until a dog is full grown and the growth plates and bones have fully set. This is only if you can keep them from reproducing in the mean time. That being said it does not mean that neutering him young will cause a problem. Chances are he will be just fine. Keep in mind that neutering dogs is a relativily new concept and there is not enough reserach on either side to be 100%. They most common issue with an early neuter would be a stunted growth. But again there is no conclusive evidence on either side.

As far as the vet. I am sure her heart was in the right place. Many vets are looking at the big picture and want to prevent over poputlation. I do not want to critisize your vet but I am not a fan of banfield clinics or any mass owned clinics because they aren't as personal and often in my experiance aren't as thourough and have too many corprate rules surrounding them. They also often lack specialties. When I had giant breed dogs I went to a vet that sepcialized in giant breeds. I currently have a doxie and my vet specializes in elongated breeds. A giant breed vet would most likly have encouraged you to wait on the neuter.

Legaly your vet did nothing wrong. Again because of lack of research there is not set standard on when a dog should or should not be neutered.

Remeber chances are he will be fine. remeber most shelter dogs are neuterd before being placed sometimes as young as 8 weeks old and usually those dogs are fine.

Good luck with Kingsley, my parents have a newfie mix and they are great dogs.
