Who Is An Example Of The Hemingway Code Hero

What is the Hemingway code?

The Hemingway Code are a set of characteristics for the characters in his works. They are figures who try to follow a hyper-masculine moral code and make sense of the world through those beliefs. The "Hemingway Code Hero" typically has some sort of physical or psychological wound symbolizing his tragic flaw of his character, which must be overcome before he can prove his manhood (or re-prove it). In addition, many Hemingway Code Heroes suffer from a fear of the dark, which represents the transience of life in the face of permanent death. The "Hemingway Code Hero" is often times a living breathing character as well, but he doesn't always have to take a human form. There is a difference between a "Heminway Hero' and a "Hemingway Code Hero." The "Hemingway Hero" is a living breathing character essential to the story's narrative.

Hemingway himself defined the Code Hero who "offers up and exemplifies certain principles of honor, courage, and endurance which in a life of tension and pain make a man a man."

This code typically involves several traits for the Code Hero:

(1) Measuring himself against the difficulties life throws in his way, realizing that we will all lose ultimately because we are mortals, but playing the game honestly and passionately in spite of that knowledge.

(2) Facing death with dignity, enduring physical and emotional pain in silence

(3) Never showing emotions

(4) Maintaining free-will and individualism, never weakly allowing commitment to a single woman or social convention to prevent adventure, travel, and acts of bravery

(5) Being completely honest, keeping one's word or promise

(6) Being courageous and brave, daring to travel and have "beautiful adventures," as Hemingway would phrase it

(7) Admitting the truth of Nada, i.e., that no external source outside of oneself can provide meaning or purpose. This existential awareness also involves facing death without hope of an afterlife, which the Hemingway Code Hero considers more brave than "cowering" behind false religious hopes.

Why is Santiago a Code Hero in Hemingways The Old Man And The Sea?

Santiago lived an extremely simple life, the life of a fisherman. Although sometimes he wished for some of the modern conveniences others had, he was able to do without them. Other fishermen had radios to pass the time while all Santiago had were his thoughts and sometimes the boy. The old man asked for the help of no one, for he did fine without the others. Santiago learned how to make due with the supplies that he had. On the boat while he is battling the mighty fish, he is able to deal with limited food and drink. He realizes he may be out at sea for a long time, so he rationalizes his supplies. Santiago copes with what he has. The sail on his boat is torn and tattered, consisting of countless rags stitched together. Mueller 2 Although a nicer sail would have been nice he knew that he could get by with the one he has. Santiago displayed a great deal of grace while under the pressure of catching his great adversary. While battling the marlin he always keeps his eye on the goal, and figures out new ways to get through the tight spots. Even when it seem that all hope is lost, he continues to persevere, so he may achieve his goal. When he is out at sea his hands cramp, and it looks as if he has to give up the fish, but he decides to stick with it in a hope that he may strive through the area of difficulty. His hands finally free up and he continues on his mission, just glad that he did not give up. Sharks attack the marlin on his voyage back to his small town, he works his hardest to keep them away. Santiago finds unique ways to keep them away. He makes a spear out of his knife, a paddle, and some cloth. When that breaks, he then uses the other paddle as a club to beat the sharks away. When food is low, the old man figures out ways to get more without losing his marlin. He sets up another rig while still concentrating on the task at hand. Santiago's relationships with others never go into deep personal information, they always stay friendly and never get intimate. His relationship with the boy is one of great importance in The Old Man And The Sea.

Have a nice day.

Hemingway VS Faulkner?

This question is made somewhat more interesting by the fact that the two hated each other. =P

For me, it's definitely Hemingway. He speaks to me more personally and has done more for literature than Faulkner. People still try to crib his style, to the point that several organizations run 'bad Hemingway' competitions to parody the phenomenon. I don't really use his style, but using his idea of "Write the truest thing you can" and following some of his methods, I never have writer's block.

Aside from his style, Hemingway revolutionized the use of third-person objective - Faulkner, while great, has generally been so in more traditional narrative. Hemingway also wrote what an author of no lower caliber than James Joyce considered to be the greatest short story ever written.

How did Hemingway described the "Code Hero"?

"A man who lives correctly, following the ideals of honor, courage and endurance in a world that is sometimes chaotic, often stressful, and always painful"Traits of a Hemingway Code Hero include:-Faces death with dignity-Never displays emotion-Is honest-Believes in nothing-Is often afraid of the darkExamples of Code Heroes in Hemingway's Works include:"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber"-Robert Wilson-Francis Macomber"The Old Man and the Sea"-Santiago“The Sun Also Rises”Jake Barnes

How would people describe Hemingway's writing style?

I think that Hemingway was one of the greatest novelists of our time. Writing in the concise, at times brutal, style that he did is not easy, and I think in many ways he used the English language to physically embody the emotional conflict that many men of his generation felt inside. His often short sentences are packed with power, like a punch, but his obsessively repeated imagery (the drunken scenes in The Sun Also Rises come to mind) speaks of a sort of emotional sloppiness — the man that feels desire and pain deeply, but can’t figure out how to express it, so he tries over and over to run away from himself.Hemingway also attempted to depict the tight conflicts between couples, and to address the fact that so little is really said out loud. He left the truths behind his stories to our imaginations, which I enjoy. In his own time Hemingway stood out for writing in his own way; this is also why some people couldn’t stand his books. I think he cherished writing, and he worked hard at crafting what he wrote, rather than crafting his “style.” Many people might describe his style as too terse or even superficial, particularly if you compare it to works by authors like Faulkner or Joyce. In the end Hemingway’s alcoholism and depression are great windows into a man who was messy and hurting, and who tried to express that through his art.

What is a "Code Hero" in literature?

It’s essentially a Hemingway hero who lives by a certain code.Hemingway rejected abstract qualities such as courage, loyalty, honesty, bravery, and saw them as relative values. A man might show bravery one day, but not the next; he might be honest in one context, but lie in a similar context. He’s searching for absolute values in his characters, a consistency in these values for every hour, every day. That value is self-discipline which can serve the hero in all situations. The code hero values that things he can see, feel, touch. The Hemingway hero drinks but is never a sloppy drunk because he values self-discipline.He is always in control of the situation.Action is more important to the code hero than talking or emotion. The value of an action is lost by talking about it. Emotion is something to be ashamed about. So the code hero doesn’t talk much. The code hero is skilled; that is, he is good at what he does. He will hate those who are incompetent or mediocre. The code hero is not a joiner; if he is not accepted into a group, he takes no steps to join it. But the code hero will have a sense of loyalty to a small group, but not to an abstract idea such as a government or army.“When you are dead, you are dead,” according to Hemingway. Death is to be avoided, but in the face of death, the man must take the most he can from life. Essentially, man must seek his reward now since death ends everything. While the code hero does not seek his own death or act in a cowardly way when he does face death. In the face of death, he is not afraid to die. He faces his demise with grace under pressure. The code hero is a man’s man. His existence is, by and large, to fulfill his sexual desires. Life is everything, death is nothing and the code hero seeks out physical pleasure.Grace under pressure. Fear of death, but not afraid to die.Hemingway’s characters live life to the fullest and must be put into a situation in which they can test their courage. This testing allows them to discover their own sense of being.

Closing sentence for a hero essay?

A hero is not just someone who helped someone, it is an everyday person just like you and I who answered the calling that few of us receive.
