Why Is My Ankle Still Stiff 3 Months After Spraining It

Sprained ankle still hurts after 7 months?

i had the same deal. not sure if you had shots of steriods and the other injection they give you for the pain. its been over a year now since ive worked. they said it was a sprain n to go back to work after a few weeks but it still hurt. it finally hurt so bad i had to go to a specialist and what it came down to was me being on it, i did more damage to it and had surgery to tighten legament n tetdens. that surgery didnt event work. i have nerve damage now to from working on it and from the injections i recieved. the injections killed the tissue around my nerve in my ankle and exposed my nerve. i say see a specialist right away and dont let them give you the shots in your ankle..good luck and i hope what happened to me doesnt happen to you...have it checked right away..its been to long for it 2 still be hurting

I sprained my ankle and it has been months but it still hurts when it's in some positions, what can I do?

Sprains take a lot longer to heal than breaks do, because there is poor blood supply to tendons and ligaments which are what is damaged in a sprain. It can take over a year to heal fully. You can check with your doctor and see if you should be splinting it or having physical therapy for it.

It has been three weeks since my ankle sprained. Why has it not yet healed?

Because 3 weeks is not enough time to heal. It can take months for a sprained ankle to get better. I have sprained my ankle twice (the same one). Sprains involve stretching or tearing of ligaments to some degree, depending on the severity of the sprain and ligaments are slow healers as they don't have much circulation. It's important to control the swelling and protect the ankle from re-injuring the ligaments. I remember my ankle feeling stiff and sore for 5 or 6 months after the fact. I don't know if you've seen a doctor but an X-Ray to rule out a fracture is a good idea but otherwise, time and patience are needed.

Physical Therapy: What should I do if my ankle sprain injury still feels uncomfortable after 6 months?

A2AAnkle sprains are graded according to severity of involvement of ligaments that stabilise your talocrural joint. Now, in your timeline and mechanism of injury there is nothing to suggest anything more than a minor lateral ligamentous sprain. In such a case the ligaments get overstretched when you twist and lose control- the nerves around the ligament talk to the brain in less than a second and fire off danger signals that demand the brain to send inflammatory juice down to the ankle ligaments involved.Remember, inflammation is the first stage of tissue healing which should last for upto 2 weeks at most out of the 6 weeks for complete healing of the ligament. In some cases the ligament will be partially torn and in some cases fully torn- inflammation should settle down in any case within a few weeks!!The first aid for an acute ankle sprain is RICE-Rest IceCompressionIcingThis works in the acute stage and helps reduce pain till inflammation is calmer. So, the inflammatory juice is doing an important job of sending blood cells that clean up the injury zone and promoting healing and repair. This means you will heal even if you have NO ultrasound or diathermy or any passive treatment. There is VERY POOR scientific evidence to support such outdated modalities of treatment and physios in Australia don't use these "money spinners" to treat anyone. I work with elite athletes and I only use ultrasound in the most acute cases and the last time I saw a diathermy machine was in India many years ago. You need a better physio. You said you walk only 200 metres!! This is ridiculous- pain in your situation so many weeks from healing time is most likely neurogenic. PAIN ≠ DAMAGESo, please load it even if it hurts! I will strongly encourage you to work on two things.Walking around on a beach and in the water/ swimming poolDoing proprioception training (on a Bosuball/ balance disc/ old pillows stacked up/ eyes open vs eyes closed on steady surface)I hope you have a speedy recovery back to walking and running! Please also read thru Sprained Ankle? I still have a sprained ankle after 3 weeks; does it get worse when I walk too much?

I have sprained my ankle. If you went to clinic or hospital or clnic they likely said to follow “R.I.C.E"Rest the area of injuryIce lowers the swelling and inflammationCompression like from wrapping the ankle so n Ace bandage and using an inflatable splint to limit movementElevating the injury with pillows, above the level of heart when laying supineLikely X-ray photos were taken.Crutches to stay off that ankle, putting no weight on it, and wearing a splint, and wrapping with Ace bandage was something I had to go through for at least 3 weeks.Once I accidentally struck a doorway with my injury. Speaking of the pain aside, I could tell that smack at the right point lengthened the time to heal. I learned (and was told) essentially that walking on it only increased the time necessary to heal; that it may never heal, or heal correctly, if I could not allow the injured area the peace and rest necessary to heal properly.Crutches suck but they help you keep the injury off the ground and that ankle from walking. One cannot wince and bear an injury like that hoping to “work through it” without treatment of some sort.
