How many miles should the BMW in-line 6-cylinder engine be expected to go before needing a rebuild?
With proper maintenance (high quality oil changes at prescribed intervals, changing spark plugs every 80–100K, replacement of aging coil packs to prevent mis-fires) these motors are HIGHLY reliable from a mechanical standpoint. I had a 2007 530XI with the N52 motor that I sold with 235K miles on it that still ran great. the current owner just passed 250K.There will be some problems with accessory components such as water pumps, alternators, starters and potentially the transfer case on the X-drive models but these are all relatively easily remedied. The motor is almost indestructible.
Can I get Comfort Access/Keyless Entry installed on a used BMW that doesn't already have it?
The Car It is a great car and I have a 335i coupe it goes soooo fast and I have keyless entry, It is helpful when you are at night or in a rush. I think BMW 5-series are great for business and luxury traveling and everyday usage. Keyless Entry You can not install after but it is okay cause BMW are still luxury elegant and fast without it. Aftermarket Not a lot of aftermarket offers or actually almost no aftermarket company offer it. Sorry I feel sorry but think about it, it is still a great BMW. Your problem was probably not the battery nor the alternator. I'd have to say with parts and labor it would be more than what the car is worth. A 2002 X type with 100,000 miles is really only worth 5-6 grand in the private sellers market and much less as a trade in. Motors are expensive and labor is even more. I say cut your losses and get something else. To answer your other questions if you wanted to find a complete motor and tranny I would suggest a junk yard that has one with rear end damage. The labor is going the be a lot because most mechanics charge hourly and it takes quite a few hours to swap a motor. The price each mechanic charges is different so it's hard to give exact quotes. A lot of work goes into a motor swap.

Resetting the timing chains should cost somewhere around $600-$700. The parts (new cam cover gaskets) are pretty cheap, but the labor is around 5-6 hours. But if you're going to get a tune-up, you should get it done while your having the timing fixed. If you don't, you'll get charged twice for labor. The x-types have some issues though. A leaking oil pan gasket is a major one, and because of the location of the transfer case, it's a fairly expensive job. The transfer case itself is known to fail. Also another expensive fix. The rear lower control arms are prone to serious wear which can cause major alignment issues with the rear tires. If there's no extended warranty available, I would seriously reconsider buying this vehicle.

Any red colored atf fluid will work, i like to use mobil1 fluids and oils. Its $10 a quart Just go to bimmerworlds website and call the number they can explain it more. There really isnt a right atf fluid brand many people use redline d4 and royal purple atf in their bmws. Any fluid is better than the old dirty one. As long as its red and says atf, its good Look at whats good for your wallet, redline is pretty cheap compared to others, also bmw atf fluid is just bought from other companies and sold as bmw brand, so dont waste money at the dealership

depending its between $80 to the hundreds, BUT the oil change lasts you between 12,000-15,000 miles.your oil indicator will come on and tell you. You can go anywhere, but i prefer a BMW dealership, they know how to take care of the cars and won't try to scam you by saying " you know is about time for your air filter to be changed, we can do that for $30..."

You can start by calling a dealer for the car you have and asking the book time to do the job- that will be a number of hours- that you multiply by the hourly rate to get a cost. I see 4 hrs mentioned, that is by no means standard across all models!As differential gears usually last the life of a car, buying the assembly used is likely a reasonable option, swapping out the whole unit is usually a much less technically demanding job that can be accomplished by casual mechanics, correctly assembling and shimming the internal gears should be done by an experienced shop.I see some have answered assuming it is a solid axle car, lots of modern cars have IRS (independent rear suspension), so the hours of required labor needed are all over the place.
