With a layover in Houston of only 31 minutes, will I reach my flight in time?

It depends. But it’s very tight. Very tight. This is especially a problem if you are trying to carry on. Flights typically board beginning 30 minutes prior to departure, so overhead bins are getting jammed about the same time you are supposed to be deplaning from your inbound. Things don’t look good for bringing a rollaboard from plane to plane. Also to consider is the type of connection, if you are flying 100% domestic, there’s a better chance of making it, because you’re more likely to be on the same concourse. If you are transferring between international and domestic or extracontinental and continental (that’s not a real term, but it’s correct to describe the situation), you’ll probably have a long haul from gate to gate. Finally, you need to remember, a 31 minute layover means if your inbound flight is on time, you have no more than 21 minutes to get deplaned on your inbound, and make it through the jetway on your connection, since most boarding doors close 10 minutes prior to pushback, cutting your particular layover time by 33%.Personally, I’d be damn nervous about it. I’d push to a later connector, if I could.

How do you estimate the number of taxis (or auto rickshaws) in Mumbai (or any city)?

It's a guess + estimate, hence I could be wrong. My approach:Step1: Population of Mumbai552 MP's for 1.26 Billion people = 2.3 million people/ MPMP's elected from Mumbai + Thane + Kalyan (your choice of city) = 8Population of Mumbai = 8*2.3 = 18.4million = 1.8Crore For easy calculation let us consider 2Crore. Step2: No of ways one could commute in Mumbai1) Walk2) Bike/bicycle3) Auto4) Car5) Taxi6) Bus7) Local TrainStep3: People preference for each transportationConsidering population distribution as below:1) Upper Class: 10%2) Middile Class: 70%3) Lower Class: 20%Preference distribution in each class(depends on affordability, distance to travel and convenience) *Following figures are purely a guess.1) Upper Class (10%) = 7% Cars + 2% super bikes + 1% taxi(others)2) Middle Class (70%) = 0.5% Walk + 10% Bike + 6% Car + 8% Taxi + 3.5% Auto + 17% Bus + 25% Local3) Lower Class (20%) = 0.5% Walk + 12% Local + 7% Bus + 0.5% Bike(Others)Therefore preference distribution:1) Walk : 1%2) Bike/bicycle: 12.5%3) Auto: 3.5%4) Car: 13%5) Taxi: 9%6) Bus: 24%7) Local Train: 37%Step4: Population traveling in taxis9% of population travels in taxi hence resulting in 18Lakh pplThese 18lakh ppl can travel alone or in group of 4 at max (4+1 kaali peeli)Making an assumption of Avg 3ppl per trip, we arrive at 6lakh taxi trips per day. Taxi's are normally used for trips which range between 5km - 15 kms of travel. Considering traffic signals, waiting time(at peek hours) and travel time, normally one ends up doing 10trips(pickup and drop) a day on an average. Therefore, (6lakh trips)/(10trips per taxi) = 60,000 Taxi's*Any suggestions/improvements are welcomed.

Is 35,000 baht enough cash to bring to Thailand for two weeks?

Hi Mike,

Planning on living the dream? Hummm. Perhaps that isn't enough then.

This question, like so many others, is much too relative and variable to address correctly.

It all depends on what you want to do, where you want to go, what you want to experience, what you eat, where you stay, etc.

If you live high-on-the-hog, such as staying at four and five star hotels, eating at top-notch restaurants, or visiting the farang hangouts...then it's going to be expensive and 35000 baht goes extremely quickly. With a four star hotel...quicker than 14 nights...for sure!

Going to peruse the fishbowl at the local massage parlor? Big money.

Going to eat at road-side stalls, stay in backpacker hostels, stay sober, see the sights...Cheap.

Your pick.

If someone arrives at an airline's check-in counter 5 minutes before the plane closes the doors, will it wait for them?

No, not a chance, not even if you were there half an hour before the plane was due to depart. Not because you couldn’t physically get from check-in to the aircraft in time, but because of everything that starts to happen behind the scenes once check-in closes. A flight is considered closed when check-in closes, and this normally happens about 40–60 minutes before scheduled time of departure.Any passenger who has still not checked in at this time will be regarded as a no-show, and their entire ticket will be cancelled, including connecting and return flight portions. Their seat will be released and given to people travelling on a stand-by ticket, if any.The flight dispatcher will start finalising all the paperwork for the flight. This includes weight and balance calculations, as well as passenger and cargo manifests that will be distributed to the pilots, cabin crew, and authorities in the destination country. This process takes at least 20 minutes and cannot be started before the flight is closed, nor can the fligth depart with any of the paperwork incorrect or missing. If the airline was to allow you to board even if you only show up 5 minutes before the flight is due to leave, they will essentially be delaying the flight by at least 15 minutes, just to get the paperwork sorted, and there is no guarantee that you won’t be held up at security because you didn’t realize you couldn’t bring liquids in your hand luggage.Delays cost an awful lot to the airlines, roughly USD $60 per minute, so that’s at least $900 right there. How much did you pay for your ticket? Less than that? Yeah, no.. you don’t have a snowballs chance in hell of getting on that flight. Once a flight is closed, it is closed.Next time, make sure you arrive at the airport with plenty of time before check-in closes. It is your responsibility, not the airline’s.

Which is cheaper in Chandigarh, Ola cabs or Uber cabs?

Uber is better. Hands down.I tried booking a cab on OLA. As per the map the Cab is 15 mins away.Maybe their cabs are special.Maybe they can actually wade through water. I called up the driver to ask where he actually was. He said he was in some location atleast 45 mins from where the pick up point was. Further, he said the OLA map is not showing my location.Technology used by OLA needs a lot of improvement. The location is always inaccurate and most of the times I am explaining the location to the driver on the phone. Superior technology means that the driver reaches your location without any trouble.Uber has a much better map. More accurate and a much more easy interface.
