About How Far Should I Go When Doing A Family Tree

How far back can you go on a family tree?

Without more information we really can't tell you how far you'll be able to get back or what you'll be able to find out. Records will vary depending on where and when your ancestor lived, what records they left behind, and what is available for that place/time. Most people of Euro-American ancestry can get back to 1850 or so on all lines, and up to about the 1400s on some lines with a lot of work (without copying and pasting un-sourced user-submitted trees, a vital error). If your great grandparents are deceased and/or were born more than 70-100 years ago you'll have more success than if they are living or younger than 70. With only names you may have a challenge distinguishing one person of the same name from another, especially if the name is common. You'll want to find more information that helps identify your great grandparents. This can often be found on your grandparents records.

Some typical findings include the time and location of major life events such as birth, marriage, and death. Other typical findings are where folks lived, migration details, military service, occupation, class/income/property information, land holdings, and family structure. Sometimes you may find biographical stories, legal actions, divorces, pensions, etc.

For the best success, follow a general research process:
1. Interview your living relatives. Use all information provided as clues, but remember things get mixed up and this is not documentation.
2. Examine your documents and those of relatives that will allow it. Generally you want to get back to a time where records are available to the public (generally to a dead ancestor or 70-100 years).
3. Prepare for research by learning about basic genealogy, genealogy specific to your known ancestors.
4. Organize your data. Free software is available.
5. Research one document at time for one generation at a time, one ancestor at a time.

If you went as far back on your family tree as possible, would all humans derive from the same ancestor at some point?

You don't have to go as far back as that.Let's say if you’re English or have some English ancestry - and suspect that you must have had an ancestor of your alive in England in 1600.That's 500 years ago.If we guess that most adults have children by the time they’re 20, then that's 25 generations back to get to 500 years ago.So your parents were two people - who gave birth to you. There was four people, your grandparents gave birth to them, eight people were your great grand parents. So going back 25 generations each time - and you can do this on a calculator by doing 2 x 2 x 2 and so on 25 times and you get to 67 million.67 million people who were alive in the year 1600 are responsible for you and your genes and who you are.But hang on, that's impossible - there aren't that many people in England even now.So what we have to assume, is that a lot of those 67 million potential ancestors of yours were actually also the ancestors of many other branches of the family true. A sort of incestuous tree. However it would be true to say, that it is utterly impossible for there to be anyone in the year 1600 who has descendants alive today, who you are not related to. That means that you and I are related, even if we only go back 25 generations. It's impossible for us not to be related, if we both have any ancestors from Europe even.So ancestry doesn't go back to a point - it goes back to every thing that was alive at that time. We are related to every single human being - who was alive in 1600 for the country we come from. We are descendents to every human on planet earth from about 40,000 years ago - (it's only that far because some tribes like aborigines were quite isolated for a time).Every living thing is descended from every living thing that was alive a million years ago.

How do you do a 3rd generation family tree?

Okay. You and your siblings are one generation.

Then you put your dad's name and your mom's name, that's two generations.

Then you put your dad's parents' names, and then your mom's parents' names, and that is a third generation.

Following is a link that is a family tree template. You will see on the far left there is a box. There is where your name goes. There will be lines leading to other boxes. The line leading from your name will go to a box on the top and a box on the bottom. The top box is for your dad's name, the bottom box is for your mom's name, etc.

If the link doesn't work, just do a search on Google Images for family tree template. You'll find lots of them there.

Good luck!

Can you edit the family tree on the Sims 2?

Yes there is a way to edit the family tree and is by using Insimenator.net "Family Tree Adjustor" as I undestand it the Family Tree Adjuster allows you to set as parent/children/sibling relations.

So your problems will be solved with that object which you can find here: http://www.insimenator.net/showthread.php?t=249 but it is not an individual download.
If you want the complete Insimenator is here: http://www.insimenator.net/showthread.php?t=269

As an extra you can set grandparents, uncle/aunt and cousin relations in SimPe but I dont know how to do that. Anyway if you set as parent the grandpa relation will appear.

Have you ever researched your family tree and how far back to?

family research is a lifetime thing so anyone who tells you they have researched their family tree and completed it is more likely to have purchased a commercial website membership and copied and pasted from other trees... which is not research and not proved and more than likely to just be a collection of unrelated names.
NO ONE can research back further than written records suitable for family history purposes were kept, that in the main and in the best recorded countries will be no more than 500 yrs and more likely even in those countries likely to be 200-300 yrs as many records are damaged or do not contain the provable information......

So 30 yrs of researching and back on all lines all proved and cited to the 1750/1800 ..... prior to that back on many lines further up to a couple of centuries BUT not enough original records/or information on them to prove 100% so only 'likely ancestry' and on a couple of lines using property, tax and probate records back another couple of centuries

When creating a family tree, is it required to include ex-spouses? Or can I just use current family info?

I have a list of my husband's HUGE family (5 siblings, 20 grandchildren, 60+ great grandchildren, etc), complete with birthdays. I am pretty confident to say, I am probibly the only one in the family with such complete info. Anyway, I thought I would create an online family tree for all of them, so everyone has all the info. HOWEVER, now my mother-in-law is telling my husband that I need to get all the info on the ex-spouses that are no longer in the family for this to be "real." I was planning on only using current family info, but now he's pushing me to ask about past family members -- Is there a problem with using current family members? Will it nullify my work?
