What does one sacrifice for cracking IIT?

I saw Sachin Tendulkar’s interview on Star Sports when he was retiring. The interviewer asked him question on these lines “ when you were a kid, did you feel like you sacrificed childhood when all your friends went out for movies and had fun whereas you practised for 10 hours a day?”His response was a classic, something that I still remember: “ There is no question of sacrifice. I was doing what I enjoyed. I have always enjoyed practicing and playing cricket. I prioritised that enjoyment over watching movies and hanging out with friends because I knew that ultimately playing for India will make me happy.”Google’s definition of sacrifice is as follows:an act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else regarded as more important or worthy. So when you talk about sacrifice, you give up something you previously liked. But what if I told you that in a broad sense, there are no sacrifices - only priorities?A few common things that people sacrifice are socializing with friends, attending family functions, relationships, sleep, any hobbies etc. If you give this up with heavy heart, you will long to get back to it. There will be some part of your mind still wishing to do those things.People generally give up these things because they have been told to. You'll see parents and teachers constantly counsel a 11th/12th std student to “give up” something and focus on studies. The student ultimately relents because hey, everyone is telling them to do so. “ Everyone is saying give up playing video games and focus more of studies.”But if your ultimate aim is to clear JEE and get into an IIT, if that is going to make you happy, why not prioritise for your happiness? You'll see how quickly you'll stop doing certain things and focus your energies on your ultimate happiness so that you eventually have to make no sacrifices. The habits and attitudes that you imbibe during two years of JEE preparations stay with you for a really long time. Make sure prioritising for happiness “without feeling that you have given up something” is a key part of it.

What video game consoles did you have growing up? And which was your favourite?

I grew up playing the PlayStation One in the very early days. Games such as Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 & 2 and the very first Spiderman games on the PS1 (My first time acknowledging what sequels were too) consumed most of my hours as a smol goofy boi. This was the age of probably 3-7.The forerunner console to this, now I'm talking like age 1-3 so I barely have much recollection, was the Nintendo 64. I remember playing a very early Rainbow Six game which was pretty epic, but I was way too young to actually grasp anything. Now, even though at around 6 I was playing PS1, a new kid crashed the party and pretty much flipped my life upside down… the Xbox, specifically a preowned one that came with Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, and Halo: Combat Evolved. The Xbox became my favourite as I began to get more games on it, and it was the only place I could play Halo: CE and 2, so it pretty much had to be my favourite.Aside from major consoles, I also had a Nintendo DS which was real awesome, but gradually became less active as I started to grow up and become interested in other things.I wish I could experience the Xbox and the Nintendo 64 again, they give me happy memories. :)Thanks for the A2A!

What is your favourite video game music?

Oh! Oh!I sense a soul in search of answers…Nope, can’t play it cool. I so got this! For me - the music makes the game more often than not!Others have mentioned Skyrim - and with good reason. Here is the London Philharmonic’s beautiful rendition of Jeremy Soule’s ‘Far Horizons’:While I’m agreeing with other answers, I give a big tick to Darren Korb’s music for Bastion and Transistor, the music from Ori and the Blind Forest, and many tracks from Final Fantasy (Terra’s Theme comes to mind!).The Civilization series - Civ 5 for a taster! For me, Brazil’s war theme from Civ 5 by Geoff Knorr is a favourite (Brazil - Pedro II) as is the haunting Field of Poppies from the same game:The composers/music directors for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt absolutely killed it. Some of the most powerful moments for me didn’t even appear on the soundtrack (e.g. the Phantom of Eldberg contract in Skellige) but here’s one example that did make the OST for the Blood and Wine expansion, ‘Seeking Resonance’ by Marcin Przybyłowicz:Those who recognised my opening line will know that this was coming: Diablo and the ‘Tristram’ theme. It’s just… just… look, just know that I took the time to learn to play a sad simulacrum of it on my guitar. On the topic of Blizzard games, it may not have aged nearly as well, but I still have a particular weakness for the Warcraft 2 soundtrack. I could put the game CD in any old CD player and the music would play. That was cool as shit for teenaged me.Homeworld 2’s greatest moments came with great tracks - the Movers were scary as the first time through and it was all down to the sound! That said, some soundtracks don’t survive all too well being transplanted away from their original context and sadly, HW2 is one such.Chrono Trigger had a ton of sweet tracks, and its main theme was also covered by the London Philharmonic!I think I am about done for today but don’t think I’ve forgotten:This is my kind of question!
