Advice On Starting A Band

Advice on how to start a band?

Man their are many options!
this how I started couple of bands

I went to a college and put up fliers about starting a band and what kind of musicians you need and your information and POST EM UP!

go around your school and do the same stuff and/or go to the school band club and see who might be interested in joining...

To be honest...You don't need to put a single dime in your band at all if they got the equipment and know how to play..that's all you need you guys are young as I take it...Just GO OUT AND DO IT! any place, coffee shops, perform at the school etc...you got the idea.
I mean it can be hard or it can be easy..your just 14, I'm pretty sure alot of people your age are trying to get started somewhere and down to jam with you

How can I start a band while living in a college dorm? Advice from guitarists who have done so would be great.?

I have two main predicaments here:

1.) I have a ton of sound equipment in my room, but judging by the cluttered dorm rooms I've seen, it can't all fit in a dorm, especially without really annoying my roommate(s). I have two amps: one is a medium-sized Marshall that sounds great in performance, and the other is a tiny practice amp that could never be used for anything but practice. Do I take both? Leaving the big one at home would give me more dorm space, but I couldn't really use the little one for much. Also, the big amp is very bulky and weighs more than I can lift; it's also a tube amp, and probably would break if dropped. Being in a dorm, I will probably have to go up stairs, and carrying this thing would be difficult without help. I'd especially like to know how other guitarists have handled this.

2.) Practice space... how? Obviously, a band couldn't practice in a dorm... so where? I know it's been done, but I don't know how to do it myself. (I know a drummer wouldn't be able to bring a drum set to college, anyway, so how do people usually handle that?) I know some places sell rehearsal space, but I'm going to be one of those broke college kids, my budget isn't very big. How much does space usually go for, or does anyone have an alternative solution? I am not a music major.

I've got plenty of experience playing the guitar, but I don't know much about starting a band, so any general info that anyone wants to throw in about starting a band or being in a band in college is much welcome. I plan on doing well in school, and I'm hoping to balance the two. Thanks for any advice!

What is your advice for a freshmen starting marching band?

Listen. Pay attention to the director, your drum major, section leader, upper classmen. If you are day dreaming or whispering to your friends you will miss something important, then you'll look like an idiot.Ask questions. If you don't understand something you will look less out of it if you ask a question than if you pretend to understand, then do something stupid. However, the maxim “there is no such thing as a stupid question” is true only if you are following the advice in the first paragraph. If you are asking a question that was already answered but you didn't hear it because you were chatting or daydreaming, that is a stupid question.Memorize your music. It may or may not be a requirement of your band, but do yourself a favor and memorize it regardless. It will make the marching part of things so much easier.

Tips for starting a teen Blues Band?

Two tips -

1) Material - listen to a LOT of blues from the source! Go to youtube and listen to the old masters - learn a couple of the tunes, get the sound in your head.

2) Name - a good name for blues is often the name of hte front man and then a city near where the band is from or some such descriptive. Often, blues bands can have ridiculously long names.

Little Charlie and the Night Cats
Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble

etc.

I am in my 40's and am starting a rock band. What do you think about the band's name being UNCLE JOHN?

I'm in my late 30's and I would love to be your back-up singer.
Could I sit on your lap? lol

What are the fundamentals of starting a band?

I’ve been in a couple dozen bands. Here are the first things that spring to mind.Be able to play your instrument and/or sing passably well.Have gear and a place to rehearse.Have a lot of time to put into it and the patience to wait things out.Have decent people skills. You’re going to need them as you:arrange rehearsals, deal with band members, book gigs, deal with fans, soundmen, music writers, etc.If you want to do original music, you’ll need to write songs that aren’t terrible. Unless you’re unusually gifted, this means learning to consider your own work critically and take feedback.Either know how to record yourself or have a lot of money to pay someone to record you, because you can’t get anywhere without decent demos.Be willing to spend a lot of time pushing your music on social media, soundcloud, etc. In these days of self-promotion, it never ends.
