All Cylinders Misfiring After Gaskets Change

What are the effects of driving a car with a misfiring cylinder?

OK. I am a gear head who loves working on cars and has done so since the 1960’s.If a cylinder is misfiring because of an ignition problem you will, in the short term, just experience a loss of power increase your fuel consumption. In the longer term, continuing to drive it that way could destroy a coil and cost you more money. If, however, the misfire is caused by an injector problem, you could seriously damage your engine. Running that cylinder too lean will cause it to overheat and potentially damage the valve or the piston. If it is running excessively rich the unburned fuel could be washing the lubrication off of the cylinder walls leading to severe wear. In either case, repairing the damage will be expensive.NEVER drive a car that has a problem. NEVER drive a car in which the Check Engine light is on. If the Check Engine light begins to flash, SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, NOW! A problem that to you seems small, if not repaired, can cause a lot of damage that will be very expensive to fix.Read your car’s manual. Do exactly what it recommends. Find a mechanic you trust. Doing preventive maintenance will cost you a lot less than repairing the damage caused by neglecting to keep your car serviced.

Check engine light, misfire cylinder 3...?

Alright so my cars check engine light came on. The car has 75,000 miles on it and its an acura rsx type s. The code signifies its a cylinder 3 misfire and i have attempted the following...
Ive changed all spark plugs, swapped ignition coils, and swapped the full fuel rail with no results...
The symptoms are as follows...
Rough idle (minor shaking, and sometimes alittle more then minor but nothing crazy)
Also the muffler can be heard sputtering. The misfire is only noticable during idle and the car drives completely fine.
While idling for afew minutes sometimes seconds, the engine light flashes but once i start driving, it just stays solidly lit. Once it sits at idle (700-800 rpm) is when it starts to flash.
(800 is normal for the car to idle at btw)
So my question is, what else should i be looking at? Ive done spark plugs, coils, and fuel rail including injectors???
Would a ba 02 sensor be realistic? Or would cleaning the idle air control valve or mass air flow do any help?
Just to remind all that the problem occurs durin idle.. The idling is rough and causes the engine light to flash after sitting for afew seconds(for example a stop light) but then just stays solidly lit once i start moving again. Ive reset the light after trying all of the above and it came back right after with the same cylinder misfiring so im stumpt.
Thanks in advance.

Same cylinder keeps misfiring, what should I do?

since you didn't mention an anti knock or o2 issue, one could *assume* it is an ignition issue. assumption. not definative.

to add, (no thumbs from me)
one other consideration is the rocker/cam cover plug seals. if they leak oil up into the plug well, they can arc a plug. a new cover gasket *kit* will have those seals.

What does "misfire on cylinder 1" mean and how do you fix it?

not sure what engine we’re talking about or how this was determined , but assuming its spark-ignition (gas/petrol) type , then there are three main reasons for misfire . #1 low compression ; a valve leaking , head gasket leaking , or broken piston ring . #2 weak/intermittant ignition ; faulty spark plug , high resistance in plug leads , faulty coil , or faulty distributor if used . #3 wrong mixture ; faulty injector , vacuum leak . #1 problem can be verified by a compression test , #2 can be checked by interchanging plugs , wire and coil pack one at a time . #3 is a little more difficult , but injectors can also be interchanged , check vacuum hoses for cuts/holes or completely disconnected .

My honda's d16y7 is leaking coolant and has a misfire on cylinder 3. should i replace the head? cost?

If it is leaking coolant from the head gasket, then you should at least replace the head gasket (maybe have the head ground (and magnafluxed) if it is old or needs fixing).

Find out where the water leak is (it might help to put the car on a lift and look under it).

Make sure that it is the plug hole that is stripped, not the spark plug (you could just change a stripped spark plug very easily).

If the spark plug hole is stripped, you can put in a helicoil (you can do it yourself very easily--shops charge too much to do the simple task).

Maybe the misfire is caused by a bad spark plug, leak of air past the bad threads, or bad spark plug wire. Put a timing light on the plug wire and see if it is flashing. If the electrical is okay, you should do a wet/dry compression test to figure out why cylinder 3 is misfiring. Compression gauges are relatively cheap (they temporarily go into the spark plug hole to perform the compression test). If the compression is bad when dry (no oil added to the spark plug hole), but good when wet (oil added), likely the piston rings are bad on that cylinder (very expensive).

If adding oil (wet compression test) doesn't change the compression, then likely the compression problem is caused by the valves (that means that you need to have the heads machined or replaced).

Compression changes as engines age. The compression measured on one valve should be compared to other valves (it is usually only a problem if the other valves are considerably a different value of compression). That is, the compression of all of the cylinders should be roughly equal.

Running a car low on coolant could overheat the engine and warp (or crack) the heads (causing compression problems and maybe causing further coolant leaks). Cracked heads would have to be replaced (magnafluxing the head, when it is off the engine and in a head machine shop, will show cracks (bits of iron are drawn to cracks in the steel when the head is magnetized).

Mazda Protege P0300 Problem (Cylinders Misfiring)?

Long story short: I have a 2000 Mazda Protege and a mechanic that relies only on computer codes. P0300 is the only code that comes up, he refuses to look at it unless the code gets more specific (and problems get worst). Wires are new and fine. Spark plugs are all fine. Manifold gasket is fine. While driving my car rapidly stalls in and out. About once every 2 seconds. I can't go fast and I cant get out of first gear because it stalls too fast. When i stop the entire car rumbles and shakes like crazy. I heard from a random person that it may be the spark box. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Any help is very greatly appreciated. Thanks!

2005 Cadillac CTS 3.6 #5 cylinder misfire?

After seemingly wasting a whole Sunday taking apart and replacing plugs and gaskets I need help. My 05 3.6 CTS is misfiring on the #5 cylinder. Pulled that plug and it was damp with fuel. Replaced that one and all other plugs and not fixed. Then replaced the upper injector gasket, no fix. Switched coil packs from the bad #5 to #3 but the problem didn't follow. Oil level is normal and about 2 months ago ran through some injector cleaner. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I'm at a loss, totally thought it would have been the coil pack.

What are the causes of multiple cylinder misfire?

Make sure that you have the vehicle properly inspected in order to determine the root cause of the misfire. It could be anything: low fuel pressure (bad fuel pump or clogged fuel filter), bad battery (believe it or not), spark plugs, spark plug wires, vacuum leak(s), jumped timing.Check it for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold and vacuum lines, anything behind the MAF sensor. The MAF sensor is a primary input into the computer. And as it heats up and there’s debris on the wire elements it doesn’t measure the proper amount of air entering the engine. This then causes multiple/random misfires and codes.Check your fuel pressure. If it is the lack of fuel pressure, it should also give you a "lean" code though. Could be a plugged fuel filter as well. Multiple misfire without any other code is rear.If the misfire started after changing the valve cover gasket, check the coil pack ground wires!!! :)

2001 Chevrolet Malibu Cylinder 3 misfire and flashing check engine light?

History on Vehicle:
I traded for this car (2001 Chevy Malibu w/ 6 cyl. automatic transmission) about 4 days ago and they said the only problem with the car was the fuel pump and it needed a battery. Car was sitting ini a garage for about 9 months.

What I Have Done So Far:
I went ahead and towed it home and first thing i did was replace the battery and check to see if I could hear the fuel pump buzzing in the tank when turning the key on. I heard it so I eliminated that problem. I check for spark from my coils and checked the plugs. That was all good. I went ahead and changed the plugs and wires and it fired right up and thats when I noticed the exhaust smoke bubbling out of the coolant tank so I immediately turned the car off and diagnosed it as a head gasket. I then took the engine apart and changed the head gaskets. The front one looked alright and the back one was bad and the pistons had water sitting on top of them. I cleaned it all up and replaced the head gaskets along with the intake manifold gaskets and put it all back together and flushed the engine out and also the coolant so all the fluids wouldn't be contaminated anymore. I noticed the check engine light was blinking while driving and when i come to a stop the check engine light stops flashing and just stays on constant. I had it checked at Advance Auto Parts and they said its a Cylinder 3 misfire and an Emissions Code. I assume the Cylinder 3 misfire is causing the Emissions code. So...

Problem:
I have replaced the wires, the plugs, the ignition coils, and it is still missing. WHY???

Symptoms:
Car idles fine and runs good. As soon as I put it into gear you can tell the car starts to misfire. After I changed the coils it started running worse it seems as when i took it on a test drive it acted like it was running out of gas. I am not sure what the issue is here, I need some help please...
