What are some comic book suggestions for a thirteen-year-old boy?
I’d get him some trade paperbacks collecting the now-cancelled Super Sons series that came out from DC a couple years ago. It tells the story of Damian Wayne, Batman’s 13 year old son, and Jon Kent, Superman’s 11 year old son, and their teaming up and adventures together. Great stuff that I think an adult or a young teen can enjoy, for different reasons. Also, DC has started putting out these $5 100-page collections that are available exclusively at Walmart. What’s nice about them is that each issue has 5–6 stories, so it gives a smorgasbord of characters, stories and creative teams. The only drawback is many of those stories are ongoing — you buy the Superman collection no. 5, some of the stories are continued from no. 4 and continue in no. 6. But still, a good value.

What are the best quirky mystery books?
Quirky - having or characterized by peculiar or unexpected traits or aspectsEdmund Crispen - The Moving Toyshop. To be honest I would probably start with The Gilded Fly his first book, but the Moving Toyshop is probably his best work. The unexpected trait of these books is good dash of British satirical humour, while never undermining the humanity of the characters the way cosy crime can sometimes do.Colin Dexter - The Wench is Dead. Borrowing a device from Josephine Tey, this is a different kind of Morse book. Confined to a hospital bed after a heart attack, Morse finds himself leafing through a local history and runs across a Victorian murder. Intrigued by loose ends, he embarks on a historical investigation.Martha Grimes - Hotel Paradise. While I like the Jury books, there is something about Emma Graham which really tugs at my heart. The unexpected trait is that the detective is a child, dimly aware of the currents of adult emotions swirling around her but fixated on the mystery of three sisters across the lake.Hilary Tamar - Thus was Adonis murdered. No one doubts Julia’s ability when it comes to tax law, they just doubt her ability to put her shoes on the right way round. When she gets mixed up in a murder in Florence, her drinking buddies from Lincoln Inn rally around to try and extricate her.Alexander McCall Smith - The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency. One of my favourite heroines, Mme Ramotswe first adventure in detecting.

Looking for a good book to read, preferably non-fiction. Any suggestions?
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca SklootScience, medicine, ethics, race, class, America - and totally readable. The woman whose cells made polio vaccine, AIDS research and cancer treatments possible was unknown til Skloot researched her. A great read. The Warmth of Other Suns, by isabelle WilkinsonOne of the largest mass migrations in human history was black folks leaving the American South. Wilkerson illuminates the statistics with human stories. The Paper Garden by Molly PeacockA 72 year old widow, in the England of George III, created an art form that replicated flowers - with such accuracy that her creations, now in the British Museum, are still referenced. And she started the work @ 72!The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund de WaaldeWaal inherited some tiny objects, and researched their provenance. His narrative intertwines art history with the personal histories of his family. Some suggestions: Skip the boring first chapter, or read it afterwards. Keep your computer handy to google the references to so many art works not reproduced.
