Any Good Suggestions Which Digital Voice Recorder Should I Buy

Digital Voice Recorder for Singer?

I use an iPod nano with a Tune Talk Belkin stereo microphone for my recordings. The micro-phone actually has a dual pickup so it is quasi stereo recording, but I find it to be very sensitive and picks up the widest range of tones of any I have used in the past. I have recommended this to several people, and the reports coming back from those who took my suggestion, have been very positive.

I have to re-qualify for my chorus twice a year, and have found the recording invaluable in checking myself, and in turning in audition recording.

The nano is about double your budget though. Over the years I have bought many $50 recorders, mostly tape, but none have come close to the quality of recording I get from my nano. You might check to see if your friend might already have an iPod, and buy the microphone for her to use with it.

I want to buy a type of digital voice recorder, but I don't know how to choose. Could you give me some advice?

It seems that you have been given some excellent advice. Let me add the Edirol R-09HR by Roland to your list. This cellphone size stereo recorder is powerful (perhaps more powerful than the needs you have described, but your needs may expand and this is a high quality professional tool). The Edirol interfaces easily, mic and line in capacity, automatic and manually controlled volume, limiter/AGC, low cut selection, high-low mic gain, remote control, etc. I have made some outstanding live recordings using this tool, and editing is a breeze. Good luck, and I hope this information assists you in your search.

How can i charge a 1.5V Usb digital voice recorder. would a usb charger charge it or fry it?

No. USB has +5V DC on it, far higher than the 1.5 V DC the recorder wants. The best thing you could do is get a few AAA rechargeable batteries -- NiMH -- and a small recharger. You could keep 1 or 2 batteries in the charger and use 1 in the recorder. When the one in the recorder dies, just swap it with one from the charger. You'll save $100's over the life of the recorder and keep 100's of batteries out of the landfills. All for under $20 at Fry's or another local electronics store.

Can I use any digital voice recorder for EVP use?

Audio Recorder—EVP has been recorded on all types of equipment. The built-in microphone on a portable tape recorder tends to pick up motor noise. Therefore, it is best to use an external microphone. It is also best to use a cassette tape deck with mechanical controls that allow easy, repeated review of the voices. Be sure the recorder has a counter. People report recording EVP on telephone answer machines and many other devices that do not have external microphones. Digital Voice Recorders (also known as an IC recorder or digital note recorder) are fast becoming the recorder of choice, but they are best used with a computer to analyze and store the recordings.

Microphone—A microphone will help you make a record of your comments during the recording session, and introduce external sound sources. EVP messages will have more meaning if you have a record of the questions asked and the recording circumstances.

Headphones—Since the EVP voices frequently are not loud, many voices will be missed unless headphones are used. The earmuff type, which completely covers the ear, is usually used.

Tape—Any low noise, high sensitivity tape may be used. 60-minute tape (30 minutes each side) is recommended.

Speaker—A separate speaker is not necessary but is good to have. With the speaker, everyone in the room can hear.

Good digital voice recorder (DVR) that does not need batteries?

First, before I suggest anything, I would like to clear a misconception you may have about an electronic device, a digital voice recorder. A DVR requires a power source, whether built in and internal, or a replaceable battery in a compartment. No matter where it comes from, an electronic device can NOT work without a power source.

My Ipaq, a Compac Pocket PC model 3650 is a case on point. It has an internal battery which is dying. I know this because I charged it and later, when I went to use it on the road, it simply would not turn on. I took it home and plugged it in and the power light blinked as it should when charging, and when I turned it on, it did a soft reboot, the same as if I had let it get too low on battery power while on the road. OK, no problem, maybe I didn't plug in the cord properly, and maybe I had not charged it like I thought I had. The next day, the same thing. It appears, the battery has no or little life left. I need to get a replacement for the internal battery. This is your potential problem, failure of a built in battery. I suggest you hit up your local electronics stores and see what is available, with either kind of battery, Staples, Office Depot, Walmart, where-ever you shop for electronics and pick one you like. My Ipaq can do what you ask, record sound on command and play back the file it saved, but it has to have the power available to do it. Because of the eventual and imminent failure of a built in battery, I suggest you look for one which will use a battery in a compartment. This way, you can put in a fresh battery before you go out and be relatively sure you will have the power availabe when you need it most. Otherwise, you risk the failure I am currently having with my Ipaq which if required, may not perfom on command since the internal battery is at the end of life. Fortunately for me, the important things in my Ipaq are in compact flash external memory which retains things without power so my current problem with intermittent battery failure is an inconvenience, not total disaster. So, no brand name or anything specific, just a suggstion or two on what you should look for with a bigger picture in mind. Good luck...
