Any Idea About Skin Issues For Guinea Pigs

Can guinea pigs eat the skin of kiwi fruit?

I would not give guinea pigs kiwi skin as they make choke on it as it is slimy and rough. There is no nutritional value to the skin so you would not be doing them any good by giving them it to eat. They can eat kiwi though, although my boy doesn't have an interest in them! It is a good source of vitamin C so you can give your guinea pig(s) it once and a while, but again I wouldn't bother with the skin. Hope this helped!

How to treat dried skin on a guinea pig ear?

I am experienced with guinea pigs, and when got my guinea pig, Oreo, she had dry skin on one of her ears. The pet shop guy just said to put lotion on it, but I am afriad to do that. Is that okay or is there some other way to get rid of it. I know she does not have mites, since we got her a long time ago and she's always had it. Thanks! 10 pts to best answer!

My guinea pig has scabs, rough skin and baldness?

Yes your guinea pig most likely has mites, however, the treatment of your choice will not work, only allow them to get worse. Your guinea pig needs to go to an exotic vet for the proper treatment. It will need at least 3 treatments about 10 days apart, and the medication needs to be given to its exact body weight. You will need to clean the cage and every thing in it with each treatment to remove any mites that might have fallen of them. Your vet will measure it out and send it home with you so you do not have to come back each time. It needs to be applied at the nap of the neck just below the ears. They respond very quickly to the treatment. I rescued two sisters that at the age of 6 weeks had lost almost all of their hair and were covered in scabs, with in a week they were running and popcorning in their cage.

It is not expensive to get this treatment at all, just the cost of the office visit which will be about $35.00 and the cost of the meds witch will be about $20.00

My guinea pig has crusty flaky skin what do you suggest i use to get rid of it without takin her to the vet?

Crusty flaky skin is usually a sign of some sort of problem - either mites or a nutrient deficiency. Is your pig scratching herself a lot and/or biting at herself? Is she shedding more than usual? Are there any scabs or wounds on her? These are all signs of a mite infestation. You CAN treat this over the counter with Ivermectin, but you will want to do some serious research on proper dosage. See the Guinea Lynx link below. Mites can also be treated with Revolution topical treatment, but that's only available through a veterinarian.

What does she eat? Does she get her daily veggies? How about vitamin C? A high quality pellet and daily fresh veggies high in vitamin c will help keep a piggy's coat and skin healthy.

Can a guinea pig eat banana peels? Are there any risks?

I have no idea - I never tried this with any of ours.  If you really want to try it on yours, go ahead, and let us know.  My bet is that they won't like it any more than you would, in which case they won't eat it; you can't force a guinea pig to eat stuff it doesn't like, if there is  any alternative available. On one occasion, I came outside with a pot of parsley in my hand (I was planning to plant it out) and parked it for a few moments on top of the guinea pigs' hutch.  One of them trotted out (we always let them roam freely in the garden) and stopped suddenly; she looked round, sniffed the air, and then saw the pot of parsley above the hutch.  She stood on her hind legs and started to eat it; although she clearly thought it was wonderful, she had definitely never seen parsley before, but instinctively knew it was just what she needed.  It turns out to be a complete vitamin cocktail, and very good for guinea pigs.So trust their instincts.  If it's good for them, they'll eat it, and it if isn't, they are most unlikely to touch it.

Can guinea pigs eat cherry tomatoes?

From what I've read,  the answer is yes, but in moderation, not more than a few times per week. Any green parts of tomatoes need to be removed first as well. When I looked over the lists of safe and unsafe foods for guinea pigs, it was recommended that vegetables from the Solanaceae family (e.g. tomatoes, peppers, potatoes) only be given in moderation. And no leafy parts or green potatoes since they contain solanine which is poisonous. As a caution, I'd also suggest only giving ripe sweet peppers. Green peppers are simply unripe red, yellow or orange peppers so feed those instead.Guinea pigs, as you're likely aware if you have one, are unable to synthesize their own vitamin C so they're like humans and need to get theirs from fresh vegetables. How do you treat a guinea pig bite?

If the recipient of the bite is a human:Wash with soap, dry, put on a topical antibiotic (for example, neosporin, but anything you’d use for a minor scratch), and cover with bandage (assuming it broke the skin). If the recipient of the bite is a guinea pig or other small animal:Assess the severity of the bite and the location of it. If it looks like a scratch that broke the skin and isn’t on an area of the guinea pig that would get dirty (like on their belly or something), wash it gently. Only use a disinfectant that is safe for guinea pigs, such as Chlorhexidine (refer to Antiseptic Solutions for more options/info). Keep an eye on it and contact a vet immediately if it appears to be getting infected (redness, heat in the area, swelling, any abnormal color changes). You can’t really put a bandage on a guinea pig, and minor surface wounds tend to heal better if they’re exposed to air.If it is on an area of the guinea pig that would get dirty, consider taking it to a vet for advice on protecting the wound and for a safe cream to put on it (and keep the cage extra super clean!). I’ve heard neosporin is ok for guinea pigs, but I’d use it sparingly as they may ingest some of it while cleaning. If the bite is actively bleeding or there’s skin that’s hanging by a flap, I’d go to the vet. The guinea pig may need stitches and a vet will be able to clean it much more effectively than you would. They can also give you advice on how to protect the wound. The deeper a wound, the easier it is to get infected.

Can a guinea pig eat bananas?

Yes, a guinea pig can eat banana but should (like other fruit) only be given in very small quantities and a couple of times a week. Just a small piece of banana each time is plenty (a cm wide).Sugar can contribute to a guinea pig becoming obese which can lead to health problems and guinea pigs are actually much better without this in their diet. they don’t seem to crave sugary foods like we often do.Make sure they have constant access to hay. They should also have guinea pig pellets daily and fresh vegetables. My guinea pig bit me. Do I have rabies?

Highly unlikely. As in, so unlikely it would have to be the first guinea-pig-to-human transmission on scientific record.Rabies is an illness that is caused by a virus. If you are bitten, you can only catch it if the animal that bites you has rabies. An animal that has rabies has caught the disease from another rabid animal. It is very sick, behaving strangely. It has trouble keeping its balance and acts confused, lethargic, or aggressive. And within a week or so, it will die.Your guinea pig is, presumably, a pet living indoors all its life. It hasn’t had the chance to come in contact with a rabid animal. It has never been exposed to rabies; therefore it cannot have rabies; therefore it cannot spread rabies.Your guinea pig’s behavior seems normal. Chances are you were scratched and bitten because the ‘pig was startled and wanted to get away from you. That’s not the behavior of an animal that has rabies and is blindly aggressive—it’s the behavior of a startled guinea pig.If you’re really worried, watch your guinea pig for the next ten days. If by the end of that time your guinea pig is still alive—and I guarantee it will be—then you have not been exposed to rabies.
