Anyone Filed For California State Tax For Tax Year 2013 Yet

Has anyone received their California State Tax Refund this year?

I filed mine on January 30th directly through the FTB. Accepted the same day. Refund issued January 31st. It has not hit my bank yet though. It said 7-10 business days after it's dispersed.

Why is the California state tax refund taxable?

Adding to the answers provided by Mark and Ai:Your state tax refund may not be fully taxable, if your total itemized deductions are close to your standard deduction. For example, if you were single in 2013, your itemized deductions were $6500, and you got a state tax refund of $1000, only $400 would be taxable, because the 2013 standard deduction for single people was $6100 so you only got $400 of benefit from the state income tax deduction you took in 2013.When you get a state tax refund for a prior year, it is taxable to the extent that you received a benefit on your Federal taxes from deducting it in that year. If you didn't deduct it because you didn't itemize, it's not taxable. If you did deduct it because you itemized, then it's taxable to the extent that it allowed you to exceed the standard deduction for your filing status.Tax software programs - both those used by individuals and those used by professional preparers - will compute this correctly, so all you need to have is your prior year return information.

Does anyone know why California state refund is taking so long?

Some times the state can take longer than the FIT amount at this time in your life.

If I have overpaid on both federal and California state taxes, is it possible to claim my state taxes as an itemized deductible on my federal filing to avoid double taxation?

Mitch and Mike have covered this already, but I wish to summarize: Your state taxes withheld (not the amount you're supposed to pay, but the actual amount withheld) is an itemized deduction on federal taxes. So, if you're using itemized deduction for federal taxes, then Yes, if too much was withheld (i.e. you have a refund) on state taxes, then that does mean that you can deduct more on federal taxes than if you hadn't overpaid. However, that state tax refund would then count as income on federal taxes the next year, so it "balances out" (of course, it could be slightly better or worse depending on how your tax rate changed between last year and this year; but that's a very insignificant issue). That's the part you were missing that made it not make intuitive sense to you.Conversely, if you underpaid your state taxes (and thus owed taxes to the state), that would mean you can deduct less on federal taxes than if you had paid the right amount. However, if you itemize deductions on federal taxes again when you do your taxes next year, you can count the tax payment to the state as part of the state taxes paid this year, and thus deduct it then. So again, it "balances out", assuming you do itemized deductions every year.

Live in Washington, work in California. Pay California state income and Washington property taxes?

Do I have to pay both California income taxes and Washington property taxes? That sounds like double taxation. Does that mean someone living in California and works in Washington pays only Federal taxes.

Do I pay taxes on social security in California?

No not Ca state income taxes BUT possible FIT when you do have other sources of worldwide income to be reported on your 1040 income tax return during the 2014 tax filing season for the 2013 income tax returns.

Never received tax refund, refiled through IRS and now status is stuck in processing been over 8 weeks?

*Update:

I called the 1 (800) 829-1040 number and kept on pressing the 0 key until I was taken to an operator. I requested to be sent to the Refund Dept. I had to wait about an hour but I finally was able to talk to a representative. The resend check was sent out on the 28th of May, I requested a trace put on the check. If they confirm that the check hasn't been cashed they will issue me another check. They said the entire tracing process could take anywhere from 30 days to 6 weeks. Hopefully if someone ends up in the same situation that i'm stuck in this information will help.

How can an illegal immigrant in the US pay federal and state taxes?

The IRS issues Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) to individuals who need one for US tax purposes but who do not have, and cannot get, a Social Security Number. This is done by filing Form W-7. The application for an ITIN must include:Form W-7;A completed tax return for which the ITIN is required;Either the original document, or certified copy of the original document from the issuing agency, that supports the information listed on the W-7.The supporting documentation provided with the W-7 must be sufficient to establish both foreign status and identity - for foreign nationals, a foreign passport is sufficient to cover both.Any alien individual with a tax obligation to the United States, and who cannot get a Social Security Number, should request an ITIN. Note that there is a specific category on Form W-7 that is selected when the individual lives in the US but is not legally authorized to work in the US.That's how an undocumented individual would be able to pay income taxes - request and receive an ITIN, and then file tax returns.FYI, employers won't give W-2s to undocumented workers not because the employee doesn't have an SSN, but because the employee can't provide the employer with proof that the employee is legally authorized to work in the US. In this case it would be up to the employee to reconstruct the earnings and report the income accurately. Note that the employer should absolutely not under any circumstances be reporting wages paid and taxes withheld under a known-to-be-false SSN.
