Anywhere I Can Watch Palo Alto 2013

In the movie Palo Alto, was Fred sexually abused by his father?

I believe that Fred being sexually assaulted by his father would make sense. The way that Fred’s father comes onto Teddy shows that he might have homophobic tendencies and even though it doesn’t last very long he still makes Teddy very uncomfortable. The way Fred talks about being gay and how men may view themselves dominant when partaking in intercorse when talking with Teddy and Skull also proves that he could have been taken advantage of and this is why he feels so hurt.

What is it like to grow up in Palo Alto, CA?

Not knowing how it is to grow up outside of Palo Alto I can only tell you about what I have observed as I’ve ventured outside of my hometown and connected with people from other parts of California, the United States, and the world.I never realized in my youth what a privilege it was to be surrounded by high achievers. My expectations for life and what a person can achieve have been heavily influenced by my surroundings as a young person. My middle school volleyball coach was a two-time Olympian, something I thought was normal until I went to college. I lived down the street from Steve Jobs and other innovators. I grew up believing that literally anything was possible. My high school has one of the highest suicide rates in the country. The expectation of high achievement is a double edged sword. There was extreme pressure to be the best at everything, not just from parents, teachers, and peers, but because that’s what is normalized in Palo Alto. We talked about who was going to to Ivy League schools, who had been nominated for an Oscar, and whose startup just sold for millions, but we didn’t talk about which of our school alumni had become excellent educators, hardworking clerks, or loving single parents working multiple jobs. I also think it’s hard to get help when people assume you have everything. No socioeconomic group is free from pain or depression.Cars drive themselves. I had no idea that other cities don’t have self driving google cars everywhere. In Palo Alto you cannot avoid them and they are extremely slow. It’s really hard to watch your hometown change! I don’t think this is specific to Palo Alto, but I have noticed a huge shift in the last ten years or so. In 2016 the median price for a home in Palo Alto was 2.5 million dollars, a number that had doubled from 2011. My grandparents bought their first home in Palo Alto with a $20k loan from a family member, I could never do that now! It’s sad to think that I’ll probably never be able to afford a home in the neighborhood I grew up in, but I’m incredibly grateful to have experienced it at all.

Where in the Palo Alto/Mountain View area can one watch Stanford football games?

Shreyes' answer is great for covering all of the sports bars. The one thing I would add is that, for home games, if you really want the best experience you should just go to the game. Stanford is unique among top college football programs in that, even with their recent successes, they rarely sell out home games. With the exception of USC and Cal, you can count on just showing up ten minutes before kickoff and buying a ticket starting at $14 at the box office without needing a Stanford connection. Even for the games that do end up selling out, you can buy face value tickets a few weeks in advance or pay slightly above face value outside the stadium.I went to almost every home game this season and loved the experience. Stanford plays incredibly high quality football. They deserve to play it in front of a sold-out stadium. Why not help make that happen and have a great time while you're at it?

How do people who went to Paly or Gunn feel about Palo Alto (2013 movie)?

I graduated from Paly around the same time as the Franco brothers. Much of the movie was a dramatization of actual events (but very loosely based), which made it really difficult to watch for me. I turned the movie off after 30 minutes. I had to turn it off because I was repuled by the attempt to capitalize off of someone else's personal and private story of rape and make it a “blockbuster” film. While we were in middle school at Jordan, our PE teacher Mr. G (Bill Giordano) molested one of our female classmate. Many of us suspected he was a creepy guy, but we didn't realize to what extent. “Community stunned by teacher's arrest”I think if you were living in Palo Alto circa 1990–1999 and a teenager, the Palo Alto movie makes more sense. We were in Palo Alto when computers became popular devices at home, the start of the internet, and many of us were directly connect to some aspect of Web 1.0 or Stanford University through our families. During the initial tech boom we were in high school and watched our fellow students invent start ups and become millionaires overnight. Many of my high school classmates had finished taking Stanford math classes before they had graduated from high school. Needless to say, the academic pressure was high. This was a weird, specific time and place in history that is shared by only a few thousand people. Many of us left for college and never looked back, it was traumatic and stressful. I think this movie tried to capture lots of that energy but failed.

If I want to take my daughters to watch high school football in Palo Alto / Menlo Park / Woodside, which school has the most fun Friday nights?

Well, you just missed the best Friday Nights Lights story of them all at Palo Alto High School this year.  Paly won the California Division 1 State Championship, beating a team ranked #5 in the country (Corona-Centennial) 15-13 in a huge upset.  Paly went 14-0 on the year, and ended up being ranked #13 in the country in the final MaxPreps poll.  Of the towns you mention, Paly has the best football team in the area. Paly generally has a very family and student friendly atmosphere at the games.   Next year, they will have completed replaced the home and visitors stands, as well as added a new snack shack, so it should be even better.  More kids attend football games at Paly than at Gunn, mostly because the team is so much better.  MA will have lights for next season as well, as does Woodside.

Did anyone watch Adult World (2013) starring John Cusack and Emma Roberts? How was it?

I watched it today and I thought it was really good. I've spent the last couple of days watching this year's Oscar nominated films preparing for the big event and it was a nice change of pace to watch something that doesn't take itself so seriously. I've been a fan of Emma Roberts since her Unfabulous days and it's good to see her in a leading role. The movie was funny in a quirky way and just the right amount of heartfelt. I don't think it's something anyone would go out of their way to watch, but I would recommend seeing it at some point.

Mountain View, CA: Where are the best places to watch the fireworks at Shoreline without being at Shoreline?

There are lots of good places around the amphitheater to see the fireworks. There should be plenty of open / walkable areas at the end of Shoreline as it goes into the bayside park, and you can probably get a good view as far out as the Stevens Creek trail (once you get past the Google buildings on Crittenden Lane). We watched from a spot on the hill between those buildings and Shoreline one year, it was pretty good. A word of caution though - I wouldn't try to drive there, at least not anywhere close to the start of the fireworks. It's a mess, parking is limited, and every year I've gone I've seen a lot of people in their cars stuck in traffic as the fireworks start going off. Getting out is similarly messy if you're closer to the far end of Shoreline.Either go earlier and grab a good street parking spot or even park across 101 and take a leisurely stroll down Shoreline. Steer clear of all the office lots since their security (and plenty of MV cops) are guaranteed to be out and about.
