Apocalyptic Story Themes

Ideas for post-apocalyptic story??!?

"Wow, I just need few ideas that I can work with. I did not ask people to write a story for me. Few simple ideas would not hurt anyone"

It would hurt you. Listen to the answers telling you to write, and come up with ideas yourself.

Albums that are post-apocalyptic?

I'm playing "Fallout New Vegas" and trying to find some albums that have a post-apocalyptic vibe to them, or tell the story of a world after WW3.

Does it have to be dark and loud? No, not really. I've tried out a few Heavy Metal, Funeral Dirge, and Industrial albums, and they're noisy, kindof depressing. I'd prefer to find some Rock, Alternative, or even Electronic or Techno, anything that would go with the overall themes of Fallout. Lyrics or ambience, both are good.

(I have considered just getting a bunch of 50s and 60s pieces that match the game's soundtrack, but that's not really my bag. Except for my 70s Hawkwind and Pink Floyd all of my favourite albums were made in the last 15-20 years.)

What is a good post apocalyptic anime that has mature themes and isn't made for children?

Error ErrorInsufficient Data. Only one Match foundI have literally only found one-ONE- anime with the same themes as HSOTD. The name is Blue Gender. It’s an anime about a world where bugs evolved so much and so well that we couldn’t control them. There’s nudity. There’s a shit ton of gore, and the anime is a tad old. Only a tad. The animation is still good by conventional standards.I haven’t finished it. I want to. It started really slow. And don’t expect any fanservice because it will make you work for it like a donkey. But it is an adult anime that grips you with the story. Damn I need to finish it now.Fracking PC. Calm yo self. Damn thing overworked itself trying to find suitable matches. There are other anime like HSOTD but those lack some of the fundamental genre tags that the anime well exploited. So if you are okay with only a 60% match then here is one more.Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is a zombie style apocalpytic anime about a guy who managed to turn himself into a function zombie. A Kabaneri (Half Kabane and half human). Using his new found strength and inability to be infected further (Ha! Just Watch), he leads a small troupe of people on a train out of their destroyed village to eventually eradicate all Kabane. So I hope that helps.Happy Hunting!Starts furiously typing

What are your most hated post-apocalyptic cliches?

Zombies, just Zombies…I have yet to find any series that explains how zombies operate,So a Virus infects everyone, and as soon as they die, they turn into undead creatures that feed on living beings. they never attack each other, they move in hordes and in 99% of cases, they are unkillable unless you pierce their brain with a tool.I'm no biologist or a scientist, this much I know: how the hell can you operate without food or most importantly; water, for weeks and months?Your brain has suddenly been reset after death and now you're just this mindless minion. I get it, but how on earth can your limbs operate without fuel? Without water your blood will simply become thick and thicker until it can no longer flow through your arteries and veins. without your blood delivering necessary supplies, so how can any cell operate without basic needs? (Sugar + Oxygen)?Unless the zombies turn on each other for food, and unless the zombies are clever enough to keep themselves hydrated, the apocalypse itself should be over in less than a week. if they didn't die from dehydration, they will be in a deep coma that they'll never wake up from, and then they'll eventually die anyway.Let's also not forget that without a functioning immune system, their bodies are supposed to start decomposing real fast, with no muscle to support movement, they should soon be static skeletons.Right??

What cliches to avoid when writing a post apocalyptic story?

This does not directly apply, but it should give an amusing view on cliches and make you think about ones you've seen. http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html

I recommend thinking about a different view on post-apocalyptic. Obviously, a nuclear holocaust has a very specific cause and effect. I recommend thinking of something original that could cause it. Though, after the fall-out, its uncertain if anyone would know who/what caused it and why.

How did people survive? Where did people survive? How has it changed civilization? Are there ethnic groups left? (Or did the survivors have to get past that for humans to survive?) What does religion look like? What type of government(s) arose form the ashes? What conflicts exist? What does the planet look like? How has animal and plant-life changed?

www.legendfire.com is a good writing community and had some interesting discussions on a different take on colonizing Mars. I think a post-apocalyptic discussion would go over well.

How do I start a zombie apocalypse story?

Okay, so I am writing, well, trying, to write a zombie apocalypse story, but I can't seem to figure out how to get it started. I have no idea how to begin/open the story. I mean, I am practically a zombie expert. I own almost every zombie movie known, and I love zombies, but I want to write my own. I have the characters down, to an extent, but I need a beginning, a good beginning, that will catch a reader's attention. I have yet to even come close to a published work, but I'm trying to work toward that goal. I'm at a serious writer's block and it's frustrating the heck out of me. Can somebody help me? Give me ideas?

What are examples of apocalyptic themes in films, TV and fiction created outside the US?

I’m assuming you’re not looking for post-apocalyptic stories, or ones about the inevitable apocalypse that isn’t quite happening yet (John Brunner, Stand on Zanzibar, and The Sheep Look Up). I haven’t read much science fiction written in languages other than English. These are all by British writers, except that Nevil Shute emigrated to Australia.Nevil Shute, On the BeachChina Miéville, Kraken (EDIT: I had the title wrong.)C. S. Lewis, The Last Battle. You should probably read the other Narnia books before that one, if they’re the kind of thing you like.Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Good Omens. You can’t get much more apocalyptic than that.John Wyndham, Day of the Triffids and other books. You might want to look up “cosy catastrophe” for more suggestions.Richard Cowper, The Twilight of BriareusArthur C. Clarke, Childhood’s End and the short storySPOILERWARNING,IMEANIT“The Nine Billion Names of God”

Why are apocalyptic themes so popular in Hollywood films, TV series and popular American fiction?

I think it is because we have lived so close to nuclear annihilation for so many years, that we have become co dependent to the concept. The doomsday clock has been within five minutes for so long we can't imagine not being under the threat of annihilation. So we create alternative concepts to approximate the same thing. We keep considering all the other possibilities so we feel more comfortable with the idea that one day, somehow we will all be destroyed by something. But they are all creative metaphors for that which is a real possibility.

Are post apocalyptic plots overused?

they're not overused, it's just the market right now is over saturated with an influx new stories. Much like vampires/werewolves, these themes have been written about for AGES. Right now via books like The Hunger Games and Twilight series, teens are showing that they're into these books, so a lot of writers are churning them out to get their name out quickly and to be successful.
