Are All Hofner Violin From Germany

Are Hofner Violin Bass Good?

They don't sound as punchy as contemporary basses. The sound is more thudding than bright, since the hollow portions of the bass absorb some of the sound. It's not a bad sound, but is very different than you hear in most songs.

I haven't played the one in your listing, but have played other Hofner violin basses. Honestly, they're probably not the best for a beginner. The action (the distance between the strings and the fretboard) is sort of high, which makes it more difficult to press the strings against the fretboard. And basses with fixed bridges (bridges that bolt directly to the body, rather than attach to the end of the bass) are easier to keep in tune than ones like the Hofner.

The best thing you could do is go to a guitar store and test drive a bunch of different basses, since each one will have its own sound and feel. You'll be able to compare the violin bass side by side with solid-body ones and see which one feels more comfortable and natural in your hands. If you bought the Hofner and found it difficult to play, you'd probably be more inclined to give up. But if you made sure you found a bass that felt like it was made for you, you'd be able to learn and switch to a violin bass once you were comfortable with the fingering.

I'm in complete agreement about the violin basses looking cool, though. If they played and sounded as good as they looked, we'd see a lot more of them.

Is HOFNER by Alfred Stingl a good VIOLIN brand?

At the price they are selling for, they can't be any good. When buying a violin, anything new under $300 isn't worth buying. They come with cheap parts that need to be replaced right away costing you at least another $100 anyway. The cases that come with the cheaper violins are also very poor quality and won't last, especially the zippers. The thermoplastic cases are better than the zippered ones on the cheaper violin outfits and will last much longer. I generally recommend spending at least $350 for a new violin and get it from a violin shop not a music store, I personally never sold any new violins at my store that were less than $450 ($600 list price). At the violin shop, they will have set up the instrument properly. Always buy from a store that will take your instrument back in trade, if they won't that just means that they don't stand behind what they sell. Music stores will usually only have a few instruments to choose from, no one knowledgeable on violins on staff and they typically get the violins already set up from the wholesaler. Violins need to be set up in the local where they will be played, local temps and humidity make a big difference in the set up which is one reason I don't recommend buying from online stores, they cannot setup an instrument properly for your area.

Which violin should I choose?

If you're an intermediate player you need to choose a violin in person. No two violins of the same brand and model will sound alike, so buying that way is pointless. Go to a reputable string dealer and play all the violins they have in your price range to find one that you like the sound and feel of.

If there is no dealer anywhere near you, check an online dealer like Shar that has an in-home trial program.

What's a good brand of violin for beginner?

Violins are not bought based on "brand." If they have a brand they are probably factory and will not sound very good. You buy a violin based on the sound it makes. I am not sure about your area but you need to go to a violin shop, maybe with a teacher, and get one picked out. Again, I don't know about your area, but I don't know if you can get anything with a good sound for under $300 (and that is borderline).

What is a good violin for beginners? Suggest a good branded violin under $200 that I can order online from India.

If you check out Shar Music's page for their Franz Hoffmann Amadeus violin (see Page on sharmusic.com),  there are a few videos... the last of which plays the instrument so you  can hear what it's like.  And the whole outfit (violin, bow, case,  strings, rosin) costs $159.00.I'm afraid they don't ship overseas at this time, but perhaps you can find Hoffmann instruments elsewhere?

Should I buy a Cremona, Hofner, or a used Stradivarius violin?

The Cremonas are usually junk. Hofners can be okay, but the lower end of their model line is kind of iffy. You're definitely not looking at a real Stradivarius; what you have is a mass-produced violin made on a Stradivarius pattern. It might be good or it might be terrible. There's no way of knowing without having a luthier or dealer check it out.

If you've been playing for a while you're not likely to be happy with a $200 violin. Those are low quality even by beginner standards. Play all the violins you are considering and see which one feels good to play.

Don't bother putting high end strings on a beginner violin. The tone qualities those strings are made to bring out simply aren't available on beginner instruments.

What violin brands are good for beginner and intermediate students?

If you’re looking for something to learn on, you can get a beginner violin outfit for <$300. Below is an excerpt from my blog post “How to Buy Your First Violin” with a few specific recommendations - these brands have served my beginning students well, and I’d recommend checking out Shar Music to take a look at some other strong brands (I’m not affiliated with the company, I’ve just bought from them for 15+ years).Where should I buy my first violin?“I’m thinking about trying out the violin but I don’t want to spend heaps of money. Any suggestions on where I should be looking for a first violin?”Though most teachers are quick to dismiss the internet as a source for your first violin, my opinion is it’s a viable option. Buying your first violin is like buying your first car – it doesn’t have to be a perfect, it just has to get you there. I recommend SHAR Music - sharmusic.com. I’m not affiliated with the company, but have purchased many items over the years with only good experiences. The company will even send you a few violins to try out, then return if you’re not satisfied. My specific recommendations for a first violin:The Franz Hoffman Prelude Outfit – Shar Music ($229)The Franz Hoffman Amadeus Violin – Shar Music ($189)
