Are Learning Disorders And Learning Disabilities The Same Thing

Do you think kids with Learning disabilities?

This is a very tough question. First I believe the school needs the diversity. Special needs students even ones with a low IQ should be in the same school as typical students, after all they are going to be dealing with typical people when they graduate.
The testing is another story. I'm not sure I even agree with the test they are giving to all students. These proficiency test are somewhat absurd. I am a volunteer reader/scribe for special needs children who have to take these test. Some of the questions on these test, I didn't have to learn until I was a junior in high school, and it is a sixth grade test!!
I know modifications are given to students with disabilities, if that child/young adult has an IEP. But sometimes that isn't enough.

There is no such thing as a Learning Disability?

That had to do with the ignorance of the times, and the evolution of education. Just as people grow and mature at different rates, people also learn at different rates. What they said to you was an opinion and not fact AND no, they would not have gotten away with that today, due to advances in testing the levels of understanding. There are people who are under achievers, and there are people, who by the hand of their care givers (parents/guardians) are led to believe that they are stupid and will never amount to anything, but individually, you have to try to overcome these prejudice opinions that others have of you and move on. Who better then you knows what you are capable of?

IS a learning disability and retarded the same thing?

Having a learning disability and having an intellectual disability (the newest terminology I have heard for MR) are two different things. Although they are both considered disabilities, they have different characteristics and criteria for diagnoses.

According to IDEA 2004, intellectual disabilities manifest as, "significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior. And manifested during the developmental period that adversely affects a child's educational performance" (IDEA, 2004). A Specific Learning Disability is defined as, "A disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do mathematical calculations. This term includes such conditions as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasia. This term does not include children who have learning problems that are primarily the result of visual, hearing, or motor disabilities; mental retardation; or environmental, cultural or economic disadvantage." (IDEA, 2004).

Basically, intellectual disabilities result in subaverage performance in all or most academic areas whereas a specific learning disability only affects one area of academic performance. People with intellectual disabilties have a lower IQ and so there lowered performance makes sense; people with specific learning disabilites generally have higher IQs and a significantly lower academic performance that does not match what the individual`s IQ suggests he or she should be able to do.
Hope this helps!

How does learning disabilities differ from mental retardation?

They are as different as apples and zucchini (Note -- the first answerer has no clue what he is talking about).

Mental retardation is a case of lower-than-normal IQ, for whatever cause: fetal alcohol exposure, genetics, etc. It affects an individual's abilities across the board.

A learning disability, on the other hand, has nothing whatever to do with an individual's intelligence. It affects a person's ability to learn or remember in a certain mode -- perhaps reading, or auditory processing, or memory and attention.

Learning disabilities include such issues as dyslexia or ADHD, which in fact may occur in individuals with very high IQs -- I personally know people who have some sort of LD whose IQs are over 130, and one person was tested in school and found to have an IQ of 156.

This is NOT the same as mental retardation!

People becoming a police officer with learning disabilities?

I am a 30 year old male. I was born with Developmental Delay Disability and I am slightly Learning Disablied. I grew up going to special education schools. Developmental Delay is a term used to describe life-long disabilities attributable to mental and/or physical or both. Do to that situation I also have learning disability disorder: A learning disability disorder is found in children of normal intelligence who have difficulties in learning specific skills. Unfortunelly mine was my learning process when it came to learning in school and passing test with out a lot of studing on the material that will be on the exam or test. Now that I am older and over came most of my disablity, but I will always be disablied.

Okay will to make the point of my question is, I also wanted to be a police officer, but I am afraid I will not pass the written test exam and if I do and that I am hired, I am not sure that I could handle the actual police work of being out there on the road. Basically as what I see being a police officer is more complexed that beign a private security guard, which I have experience being a security guard.

Is it a good idea for people who have learning disablities to become a police officer.

I am not really sure if there are people like me who have learning disablites that are police officers.

My disabilities are reading , math and comprehension processing.

I really want to be a police , but part of me says I cant do it and part of me says I am able to do the patroling and looking for suspicious activity.

I am taking karate shorin ryu, will that help with learning the self defense tactics ?

Plus I have no experience with the laww codes and traffic codes are thoughs easy to go over when on the road as a police officer ?
