I will give you two games that I have played through countless times because of the quality of their storylines and the near-perfect technical designs they use to draw you into their worlds.The Last of Us: Remastered (PS4)This is a post-apocalyptic story that grapples with universal themes of loss, guilt, fear, and hope. And, the characters are so well-developed and nuanced that you feel connected to them and their experiences. Also, the story employs a great sense of “space” in terms of pacing between moments of tranquility, reflection, and character development to moments of peril, action, and intensity. And, all of this is set to the backdrop of a stellar soundtrack that is one of the best I have ever heard. Experience this game if at all possible.Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the PatriotsI played through this game’s story at least 5 or 6 times, and every time I did I was fully engrossed in its compelling yet (sometimes) goofy world. Now, it helps to have played at least the original Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (the latter of which I would highly recommend for its story line as well). But, regardless if you’ve played those two or not, this story is set in a future in which war and private militias are the prime sectors of commerce around the globe, and it is up to the protagonist, Solid Snake, to save the world from ending in chaos. This is another action game that gets perfect marks for pacing and soundtrack. And, by the end of it you’re left contemplating its overarching themes on war and death.These are just two games with stories that have always stuck with me, but there are so many more out there! Go play in the worlds you want to be a a part of! That’s the beauty of video games; YOU are the chief actor of the story.
