How do you recover deleted files from a usb flash drive?

It you are using XP, do the following:

Tools - Folder Options - View.
Make sure that you are able to view hidden and system files.

You will then find a hidden\system file called Recycled.
Your deleted information will be in there.

However, you will need to go to www.download.com to get a program to decompress it. This decompression could take over an hour per mb.

Also, using this method, you will not be able to recover all data. The data that you recover also has a risk of been corrupt.

This will not work if you have formatted the USB Drive.
Also, If you have Windows XP system recover disabled then this will not be there.

Can the police retrieve my deleted files....?

Yes. There are these people that are called computer forensics people. There are many reasons to employ the techniques of computer forensics:

* In legal cases, computer forensic techniques are frequently used to analyze computer systems belonging to defendants (in criminal cases) or litigants (in civil cases).
* To recover data in the event of a hardware or software failure.
* To analyze a computer system after a break-in, for example, to determine how the attacker gained access and what the attacker did.
* To gather evidence against an employee that an organization wishes to terminate.
* To gain information about how computer systems work for the purpose of debugging, performance optimization, or reverse-engineering.

Even if you delete a file or something off your computer, these guys/girls can recover it instantly. Even if you burn your computer, there are ways that they can recover it.I mean they have been trained to do recover that type of stuff.

How can i remove virus from my usb without deleting files?

From the start menu, click “run” and then type cmd. Then, type your Flash Drive letter followed with colon. Like this, J: then type attrib – r –a –s –h *.* and press enter. This will unhide all files. But always remember that do not open the Flash Drive by double clicking the icon in my computer or by right clicking and then open, explorer. But instead of that, open the USB Drive by using folders icon, then click on the folders icon and then select your Flash Drive. You can now see what the virus does with your Flash Drive. The virus disguises itself as folder. You can see that system file icon, click that file. In the detailed view, you can clearly see that the system file has a type description of application and the system folder has a type description of folder. Delete all that files but carefully do not delete the folders. Then after that, delete the autorun.inf file, you can delete these files using the 7-ZIP. Then delete all the folders and files you think that you did not save them. The folders could have names like recycler, system volume, then delete them also. You can also see the recycle bin like icons, delete them also. After that, scan your flash drive with some anti-virus to delete exe infecting viruses. But if you do not have a proper anti-virus then click on search and select all files and folders. (In the All or part of file name field, type *.exe), in the Look In field, select your Flash Drive, in the More Advanced options select Search System Folders and Search “hidden files and folders”. And when your search is complete, delete all files.

This is also the best gifts you will ever give to your friends, not an item but your help. Hope it help! :)

Recover files from a flash drive (USB) that has been formatted?

Formattting won't make the data in USB flash drive or other disk erased permanently. Those formatted files are still stored on the disk just invisible or inaccessible. Only the FAT or NFTS table erased the information about where those data were saved but the real data are still intact there in sectors of the USB.So as long as those data are not overwritten by new data, it's highly possible to recover the files. And the MOST Effective way is to rely on some format recovery programs. Have a try of Wondershare Data Recovery - Format Recovery,
http://www.disk-utilities.com/data-recov...

It should help. But before your files are recovered, better not put more files to your usb in case the original data are overwritten.

All the files in my USB turned to shortcuts. How can I recover them?

All your files are there in your USB drive. You just need to unhide them so don’t try to format the drive.Follow these simple steps to Unhide the real files :Open My computer and click on organize button in top left corner as shown in the image below. Other option go to Control Panel and Select Folder and Search options. Then click on Folder and Search options. A new dialog box will appear in front of you. In that click on the View tab then you will see options as shown below in point 3.Now click on Show Hidden files, folders and drives, then uncheck these three options:Hide empty drives in ComputerHide extension for known file typesHide protected operating system files .Then click on Apply and OK.After that you will see some hidden folders in your USB drive. These folders will not have Shortcut signs so open them you will find your data. And about the shortcuts, they are coming because you have some rootkit/worm in your Users folder in C drive (Operating System’s Drive). Scan that folder with any good antivirus and you will find the virus. This way in future it will not convert all your folders in USB drives to shortcuts. You can change the settings after you are done or you can keep it like that, your decision.Goodluck!!!Both the Images are taken from google.

IMPORTANT - If I delete stuff from my USB external hard drive, does it still remain in the computer itself?

So I was going through old files on my external hard drive, meaning I can plug it in and take it out as I please. I deleted many files from it recently, and I am trying to convince my parents that the deleted files do not go into a remnants type file within the computer itself. If there actually is a remnants file, I would like to know how to deal with that.

If they are just gone for good, please give me a detailed answer, and any sources I can use to show my parents as well.
