Are Windows Store Apps Designed Only For Landscape Orientation And Interaction

These are the Windows Store apps Ratio Interactive has designed the past year (Disclaimer: I've been heavily involved in these designs):GQ:Nasdaq Director's Desk:iCookbook:NatureSpace:Sports Illustrated:Not from Ratio's hand but also great looking apps:Sigfig:iPass Open Mobile:Ski Resorts:Getabout.me:

(My standard disclaimer for Microsoft-related questions applies here: I work for Microsoft, but I don't speak for Microsoft. They pay me to write software, not to represent the company, and there are good reasons for that.)TL;DR: Developers can write apps that support landscape and snapped-landscape only, however they should write apps that support portrait mode as well.Let us consider the Windows 8 app certification requirements.  I don't see a requirement that app developers also support portrait mode. Developers of Windows Store apps can design them for landscape mode alone, provided that they also support snapping:Your app must support a snapped layout. In landscape orientation,  your app’s functions must be fully accessible when the app’s display  size is 1024 x 768. Your app must remain functional when the customer  snaps and unsnaps the app.So there's the requirement. But the guidelines for layouts for Windows Store apps are also noteworthy. They do suggest that app developers support portrait mode in addition to landscape:Users can rotate and flip their tablets, slates, and monitors, so ensure  that your app can  handle both landscape and portrait orientations.I suspect that the demos that you've seen have just been focused on other things. There's a lot of material to cover in the Windows 8 programming model, so any demonstration must necessarily leave out a lot. But here's one that does cover portrait-vs-landsape usage:

Not after a clean reinstallation. However, it is possible to do an upgrade with Microsoft’s free Media Creation Tool which does not remove installed apps or user data. Most other recovery options will remove installed apps.

At least three reasons:The users preferred way holding the device - this is probably the most important factor, sometimes it is better to hold the device in a portrait position (e.g. when walking and holding an iPhone - and using it in one hand), sometimes just have it in landscape (when the iPhone is not in the  hand - and using it with both hands). I just hate some apps which would not turn orientation. There are exceptions, e.g. some games or videos or Netflix are always better in landscape. Apps on iPads are almost always better in landscape. Exceptions here are books, some books are better to be read in portrait on the iPad (the page size is bigger). It is very annoying for the user  to turn the device just because the app would not change orientations.Apple recommendations - Apple invests a lot into research, it is worth listening to them. Some apps would look better or could have separate interfaces for the landscape-portrait orientations - but only in cases when these would serve the users better. A great example is iPhone 6S+, some apps are just better using the screen estate when are turned into landscape (e.g. Weather app, Notes app,..).The different orientations are not about graphics, these are about users preferences of holding the device and different screen estates and different screen size ratios. It is great for some apps to differentiate orientations. I personally use both orientations a lot. When I start up an app which I prefer in a certain orientation I just lock that preferred orientation for the time I use the app. Locking and unlocking orientation is very simple.

Do pc applications run in windows tablets?

Windows tablets come in two flavours. Windows RT - which can only load apps from the Windows Store. Or Full Windows (often called Windows Pro, as that was the name that the Surface Pro tablets used). These tablets run full Windows and so can run ANY Windows programs - from the store or from elsewhere.

Be aware of the space and memory limitations! And some apps are not designed for touch use...

But you can take something like the Dell Venue Pro 8, or the Lynx 7" tablet for under $100, and run photoshop on them - but it is likely to run rather slowly! and you wont actually be able to edit anything, because the screen size is too small - but it will run!

Can I download an Android or App store App, to a Windows device, legally that is.?

Sure you can but it won't run! Android is a form of Linux. Ah but you can load Android on a blank sd card and try it on your phone if it runs every thing including sound camera and WiFi and the phone read upon reflashing the phone running from a sim card is slow.

Hey! See some cool and useful apps from the Windows Store below :)Trello. This organisational app offers tons of additional features, such as collaboration with other users and integration with online tools, as well as several viewing modes and tags to make organising multiple pieces of work manageable. It’s cross-platform, too, so your colleagues will be able to access it anywhere, regardless of the device they’re using.Vectr. It is a free software for any kind of 2D grapics design. Vectr has very a very low learning curve so it’s perfect for beginners. Otherwise, professionals will find a lot of useful features for manipulating their designs. The Cross-Platform is also available which means that you can work online or download it to your PC and work offline. And that’s not all, this software will definitely surprise you.Netflix. Netflix keeps getting better and better. If Breaking Bad, House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black aren’t enough to sway you, the heaps of films available at a single tap will. The app itself is free, but you’ll need a Netflix account to log in.TuneIn Radio. TuneIn Radio has all the features you’d expect: hundreds of radio stations divided up by region, and many more categorised into dozens of genres. Similar to the website, sports and news stations are given their own sections, and it’s also possible to filter the thousands of stations by language. TuneIn supports podcasts as well, with shows organised into similar genres. If you’re a radio fan, this app is a must.Adobe Photoshop Express. A simple-to-use app for on-the-go photo editing, Adobe Photoshop Express is a must-have for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 PCs. Tweak your pictures with everything from cropping to colour management, or just touch up your photos with automatic fixes and a range of filters.Hope you found something useful :)

That just might not be true. There are a fair share of apps on Windows that are very well designed and the advent of Windows (metro?) apps have put design on focus. It could also be that developers deliberately spend more time for design of mac apps because users of Macs in general care more about design than typical windows users. ( I am not a developer so take this with a grain of salt.)

Hi! I use Lumia 950, and here are some apps I use frequently and consider the best for me:Office RemoteI open my Powerpoint file, and enable Office Remote to connect the phone with the laptop. This is the main screen. Moving forward and backward, with current slide and next slide preview.Slides browser. And this is my favorite screen: The current slide is viewed fullscreen, and I can simulate laser pointer by touching and dragging across the screen. With this, I can move freely without having to rely on my laptop PC. I have the presentation slides in total control in my hands.TruecallerThis app helps me a lot. People with Truecaller installed on their phones can label an incoming call and share it to the server, and when the same phone calls my phone, it displays the label set by previos person. I don’t know exactly how the system works, but most of the annoying spam callers (credit cards offers, surveys, loans, etc.) got their numbers labelled and I can choose to reject the calls.OnePediaJust an unofficial Wikipedia browser with beautiful UI design. I love to browse and read Wiki articles on it.OneCalendarJust an alternative to the already great Outlook Calendar. It has full support to Google Calendar, displays shared calendars’ events details.SharitAn awesome universal sharer. Through this, I can share contents to multiple accounts of multiple social media. Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin . . . everything through single app.SkypeMade awesome with Office 365 subscription. Skype minutes enables me to call landlines and mobile phones through wifi.
