Are You Comfortable Eating Genetically Modified Plants And Animals When

Are you comfortable eating genetically modified plants and animals when?

Japan and South Korea just announced they will not buy grains from USA due to GMO contamination.
Major food distributors in USA now favor labeling so we know whether the product is GMO.

We are winning.
Death to Monsanto!

What is genetically modified animals? GMO?

A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques, generally known as recombinant DNA technology, use DNA molecules from different sources, which are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes. This DNA is then transferred into an organism, giving it modified or novel genes. Transgenic organisms, a subset of GMOs, are organisms which have inserted DNA that originated in a different species. Some GMOs contain no DNA from other species and are therefore not transgenic but cisgenic.
Genetic modification involves the insertion or deletion of genes. When genes are inserted, they usually come from a different species, which is a form of horizontal gene transfer. In nature this can occur when exogenous DNA penetrates the cell membrane for any reason. To do this artificially may require attaching the genes to a virus or just physically inserting the extra DNA into the nucleus of the intended host with a very small syringe, or with very small particles fired from a gene gun.[1] However, other methods exploit natural forms of gene transfer, such as the ability of Agrobacterium to transfer genetic material to plants,[2] or the ability of lentiviruses to transfer genes to animal cells.[3]

What are dangers of genetically modified foods to humans, animals and the environment?

There are none! No one has ever died, or even gotten sick as a result of GMOs and, personaly, I think your question is slighlty loaded as there ARE benefits to GM crops. By planting corn that is resitant to corn bore and corn rootworm, you greatly decrease the need for pesticides. And I'm warning you... I'm about to get on my soapbox....I hope the previous answerer got a good grade on her paper in her humanities class, because if she takes a crop science class she'll need to re-write it... It doesn't hold water! I just did a quick search on both glyphosate and Round-up (Monsanto's tradename for glyphosate) and both pose very little risk to human health. In fact, in cases of intentional ingestion (suicide) it is fatal only 10% of the time (as compared to 80% for paraquat) and I'm just guessing, but I would assume if someone is trying to end their life, they aren't going to dilute it down to the application rate... so keep that in mind! Also.... why on earth would a farmer use MORE of a product then is necessary? Farmers operate on a very small profit margin, and making decisions like that won't keep them in business very long! I will grant that today's crop plants don't have much genetic diversity, but adding 1-3 genes in a GMO crop has no effect in decreasing diversity. The are no different then any other plant. Yet, I think, most importantly, consider the impact on rural life! Most farmers have a job off the farm and the added flexibilty of GM crops (having a greater time frame for application... ie- glyphosate can be applied after the corn has emerged) allows people who want to farm the ability to continue to do so! To continue to work the land and raise their children the way they were raised. Please... before determining something is horrible after listening to a special interest group.... put yourself in somebody else's muddy boots.

Why are genetically modified plants thought to pose a greater risk to the environment that GM animals?

Pollen.

The genes that have been introduced into a plant can be packaged into pollen that in many species can be carried for tens or hundreds of miles under the right conditions. This means that extraordinary measures have to be taken, like growing some GMOs in caverns, in order to be absolutely certain that no altered genes spread into other populations.

Are GM (Genetically Modified) crops and animals safe?

NO! GM (aka GMO) crops, animals and recently humans are not safe or stable. They say that they are but that's false and we'll be paying the price for it in the future for our own ignorance. They aren't testing these things out properly and are just putting them out to the public as fast as they can while covering up their failed experiments. Monsantos is on the top of this, as are other corporations that have invested in this failed technology.

Here's only a few of the side effects:

1. Direct Cancer and Degenerative Disease Links
2. Near-deaths and Food Allergy Reactions
3. People have died from eating GM
4. Viral and Bacterial Illness
5. Birth Defects and Shorter Life Spans
6. Lowered Nutrition
7. Toxicity to Soil

Recently in the news cattle deaths have been linked to GM grass that was producing CYANIDE (IS THAT SAFE & STABLE! NO!). You can look it up on Yahoo search:

Grass linked to Texas cattle deaths

Also, they've recently Genetically Modified some babies. What will these babies mutate into in the future, only God knows. I can tell you this that the mutations won't make them into superheros, as they would like us to believe. They have also created human and animal hybrids, that was decades ago and they're just telling us this now. Who knows what monstrosities they now have that we don't know about.

Search on Yahoo:

World's first GM babies born
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-43767/Worlds-GM-babies-born.html

150 human animal hybrids grown in UK labs
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2017818/Embryos-involving-genes-animals-mixed-humans-produced-secretively-past-years.html

The people and scientist who are doing these type of experiments are not human by any means. Because by their actions, they are not trying to improve the human race but to destroy it. Well, I hope that people will read this and do something about it before it's too late.

4 questions on Genetically Modified Organisms or GMO help please!?

Guys, please give me a

1)definition on what GMO is.
2) advantage of doing it.
3) disadvantage of doing it.

and

4) the process how it's done.

I want an outlined answer. Please science wizards there, help me!

Thank ya so much! :)

What two animals would you combine (genetically) if you could?

I'm doing a project on it in science class.
have to talk about what it would look like if they had a baby.

It can any animals, mystical, extinct, alien or existing.

Modified plants and animals in food production?

Ya why not? If you really think about humans have been modifying plants and animals for a long time. When we first tilled the soil and intentionally planted a seed that nature didn't put there and we first slaughtered an animal we raised for that soul purpose, we have been modifying nature. Now its just so that we can have healthier food in more quantities.

Some current applications of plant biotechnology include:
Developing plants that are resistant to diseases, pests, and stress
Keeping fruits and vegetables fresh for longer periods of time which is extremely important in tropical countries
Producing plants that possess healthy fats and oils
Producing plants that have increased nutritive value
Producing soybeans with a higher expression of the anti-cancer proteins naturally found in soybeans
Developing a whole range of higher value added feed
Other applications such as lignin modification in trees that will make possible much higher fiber extraction rates in the paper and pulp industry
Producing new substances in plants, including biodegradable plastics, and small proteins or peptides such as prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines

Animals
Increased resistance, productivity, hardiness, and feed efficiency
Better yields of meat, eggs, and milk
Improved animal health and diagnostic methods
