Army Reserve Personal Experiences How Was/is Your Time In The Army Reserve

Experiences in the navy reserve?

Yeah screw that "military pride" crap. The military sucks a hell of a lot out of you during your time in - it's only fair you should return the favor. Serving your country is just an added benefit, but anyone who joins the military without wanting to get something out of it is a moron, or at the very least officer material.

I know it's not what you want to hear, but there aren't any benefits for families in the Reserves, unless you or your unit is actually called up for active service lasting over 31 days (meaning you're back on active duty again). Benefits you do get only apply during your monthly drill time (one weekend a month), and your 2-week drill period (once a year). The 2 week period is just like being on active duty. You can also be assigned to Temporary Active Duty, which is less then your unit being called up, and more than your drilling period. For example, I did a 2 month temp stretch at the Pentagon (my Reserve unit was a CNO unit at the Pentagon) at my Reserve CO's request.

Of course you do get the usual Vet bennies (VA loans) as well as some education perks, but as a Vet you already have access to those anyway.

That means you (you, not your family) only get to use services (e.g., doctors, etc.) while you're on a drilling weekend, or when you're on your 2 week drill period. Anything outside of that and you're on your own. Since you're prior Army and not Navy, they'll probably drop you a rank also, so keep that in mind.

Here's the links to the Navy Reserve Benefits guide and the Benefits page on the Navy Reserve site:

Remember when reading to view the fine print - it won't say your family WILL get benefits, only that they MAY get them based on eligibility. Eligibility means whether or not you're recalled or not, which doesn't fit into your long-term game plan.

Problem with the Reserves is that while the bennies and programs aren't bad, there's always the possibility of being recalled to active duty. I always knew that was a possibility before I joined the Reserves, and I was comfortable with it. But that's something you need to think long and hard about; you obviously left for a reason (like most of us did), and you really need to consider the real possibility your education could get put on hold if you're recalled.

How was your experience of being enlisted in the US Army Reserve after signing the contract?

Well, kinda interesting in that the Army screwed up….. I enlisted as 88M. I got sent to AIT for 88L. Which, I never even knew the Army had watercraft engineers, and it was really educational and interesting. Nobody seems sure exactly how that happened. Well, the nearest unit with that MOS was pretty far away from me, and I wasn’t willing to move or travel that far for my UTAs, so I had to get retrained as 88M. Interestingly enough, my PMOS remained 88L the whole time I was in.I was licensed on the CUCV, HMMWV, M35, M939 series 5 ton, FMTV, HEMMT, and M915/M915A1/M915A2. I was in a non-deployable unit, so when I was activated to go to Afghanistan, I was assigned to a Regular Army unit which needed to be brought to strength. I was assigned to man a .50 on a gun truck. I had a shootout where the enemy was just little specks out on the horizon, and two encounters with roadside bombs, the second of which wounded me, and left a rather sizeable scar on the left side of my neck.I do have issues with PTSD from it, though I am getting better. I did my four years, and did not reenlist.

Personal experiences from the Navy Reserve?

My main goal for joining the miitary was to go into active duty. But I only got a 47 on the asvab and my recruiter told me that there arent many jobs open to me, but he could take me to meps to go in the navy reserve. I know they only work one weekend out of the month and two weeks out the year. I feel like that would be a waste of time.

42a Army Reserves.?

On a 6 year contract how many times do you think I would get deployed?
Probably ZERO. There is a SMALL possibility you would deploy 1 time.

When I do get deployed where do they usually send 42a s?
You probably won't deploy. If you deploy, you go where your unit goes. Kuwait and Afghanistan are about the only likely locations. There will be a few deployments for small detachments to many other areas.

If you are a 42a where have you been deployed to and what do you do?
You go where the unit goes. We had 42As in Iraq and Afghanistan. A 42A will do personnel paperwork, just like they have been trained.

If you re in the Army what was your experiences with deployed 42a s?
In Iraq, the 42As in the section were worthless. They couldn't collectively write a memo or email without spelling errors. It usually took 3 tries before they put out correct information. If we had questions, we asked senior Soldiers with experience or the active duty 42As. There have only been a couple 42As I would trust with a loaded weapon. In Afghanistan, the 42As we had were a bit better.

ARMY Reserve AIT Salary?

Basically you get your base pay, then you get other allowences if you have a wife, kids, and a house. AIT for that would be 99% classroom time maybe 3-7 days in the field at the end and your regular PT. If your good with numbers it should be a breeze.

Are you in the ARMY? Can you give me your experience?

The Army is like any other job with some good benefits and some really bad consequences. It all depends on what you want to do as far as job goes with whether or not you'll like what you do. Not everyone is pulling triggers and not everyone who isn't an infantryman isn't in combat. You have to decide what you want to do with your life and what the Army can do for you. As far as the reserves go, it and the National Guard, are the best part time job you could ever get.

I've been in 10 years and I'd d it all over again. I plan on going into the reserves if I decide to leave active service because it offers me greater flexibility in my deployment schedule.

What are the Army Reserve Benefits?

Plain and simple, I plan to enlist in the military, specifically the Army Reserves. I have a basic understanding of drill pay and allowances. Never the less, after several days of frustrated searching, I can find no clear cut information on what specific benefits and allowances the Army provides. My question then is, obviously, what are these benefits? This is so I can plan ahead for the future, as I've always been a very analytical person i.e. I'm anal retentive.

So far I understand drill pay, and BAH type II, and the various tuition benefits. But do reservists receive a BAS, a clothing allowance, FSA, etc?

If it helps to clarify, I hope to be stationed in either NY, PA or OR and realize that each state has it's own set of benefits. So please, before the Snark Sharks rear their heads, I am looking for a blanket over view of the federal, I repeat -FEDERAL- benefits of the Reserves, and do not look forward to answers belittling an earnest effort to acquire information that has thus far eluded me. So if you don't plan to provide a helpful answer, don't answer.

Also, any knowledge of incentives being offered on X-year enlistments for the MOS:
42A, 42F, 46R, 46Z.

And please feel free to provide your personal experiences and recommendations regarding enlistment in the reserves. Thanks and sorry for the snotty spiel, just cranky and tired of arrogant jerks on here.

P.S. No, a Recruiter has neither the time nor patience to explain this all to me, without my intent to enlist then and there.

Are the Army Reserves respected by active duty veterans? I want to help my country but due to my job, I think I’m a better fit for the Army Reserves. Will I be considered a true veteran and have the same camaraderie in the Army as I’d expect?

There are some things that those in the Reserves have done to earn being “"looked down upon” by their active duty counterpart. But honestly these are very few. For example after I got home from Iraq, I went to Medical Hold due to non combat injuries. They moved the unit next to the firing range, and on the 5th of July yelled at everyone when they hit the dirt when the range unexpectedly went hot.Shouts of "Where's your military bearing!” and article 15 (punishment) threats resounded in the formation. Mind you, none of us had been out of combat more than a month… After that they proceed to make fun. Unsat.By and large, howeve, they're soldiers just like anyone else. In the 80’s their weekend drills consisted of drunken BBQ’s and nearly no training or work or so I've been told anyway. Not so anymor. They train hard and deploy to combat zones. Even the National Guard does.Rank seems to go a bit slower. Maybe it's just lazy personnel offices or maybe it's because you only gain time while active (training, deployment- whatever). There ARE opportunities to work full time in the Reserves as well.If you're solid with work, home, and family then the Reserves or the Guard is a great way to go. Don't let negative opinions sway you, you know what you're after and it's your life. It's awesome that you care to serve at all, and at the end of the day they're all my Brothers and Sisters. I love them all and pray for them when they deploy.Make sure your employer knows your plans. Make sure they'll support you. Some are assholes, like mine when I went into the Guard after Active Duty. He'd call me up and demand I take time off during Drill Weekend to cover a shift. Of cours, getting the Army Band to serenade him fixed that, what with the "We Appreciate your support!” By law they have to allow your service obligation. But you've a responsibility to tell them and keep them informed.Good luck whatever your decisio!
