Average Expenses And Salary For Software Developer In Germany

What's the average salary in Italy for software engineer?

The average salary for a software engineer in Italy is €29,439 per year. Though, this number is different in different cities of the country. It also depends on how many years of experience you have and what you are skilled at. Thus the salary range starts from €20,158 and goes up to €47,938. In any case, this is not a bad level, comparing to other European countries. Though, it much cheaper to hire remote developers from Kyiv, Ukraine than to hire developers in Rome. Especially considering the lack of developers in Italy. This means that the demand for coders is very big there and it should be easier for them to find a job.

Are engineers rich? (generally)?

I would say engineers have the potential to be rich if they choose to. It is all in how save some of their salary and invest it. I know many engineers who are millionaires and they got that way by saving each month and investing in good stocks.

Now if having a net worth of a million dollars or more is not your idea of rich then that is another question.

Recently I had a job offer from a software company in Hamburg, Germany as a Senior PHP Backend Developer. They have asked me to give them my gross salary expectation. What would be a good number?

From Google: "Software Engineer Salary (Germany) The average salary for a Software Engineer is €44,614 per year. Experience has a moderate effect on pay for this job. Most people with this job move on to other positions after 10 years in this career."This is just a ballpark number since the real number probably ranges from 35k to 150k (for hard to fill positions).I am sure your employer has a pretty good idea of what they are willing to pay for this position. Being honest with them about how you have no clue as to what your abilities are worth in Hamburg would be a good way to start the conversation. The next issues is what your current job is and how much you are paid for it (and it is ok for you to disclose that with the caveat that you are not necessarily looking for a raise or the same salary... unless you are working in a very low cost country). You also need to research the cost of living in Hamburg and balance that against the salary to make sure you will be able to sustain the lifestyle you want. In the end, you should make sure you are getting a number you will be happy with and is equivalent or higher than your current salary after adjusting for cost of living and lifestyle which can differ very widely between countries.
