Bad Timing Belt No Spark

Would bad timing cause engine not to start?

ya it just sounds like the timing is off, the timing of the revolution of the Crankshaft in relation to the Camshaft. just adjust it, there should be a dot on both of the pulleys to use to adjust!

Will I get spark if my timing belt is broke?

I'm not sure. It appears your PT Cruiser uses a single coil that acts as a coil pack, so you will get spark timing even with a bad timing belt. The timing signal is generated by a crank sensor and the crank turns when you use the starter, and without a distributor the spark will go... hmm... without a cam signal, how does it know where to send the spark? The crank sensor is incapable of telling #1 TDC from #4 TDC - they are exactly the same position of the crank. So, I am not at all sure.

However, I think you are right to suspect the timing belt. Remove the screws on the top of the timing belt cover and have a peek - if the belt does not turn with the cam when a helper cranks it, you know. Now you could use some good news - Gates indicates the engine is not interference - all you need to do is replace the belt if it is broken. The water pump in your PT Cruiser is timing belt driven, so that should be replaced at the same time.

No spark from a 1996 mazda mpv 3.0 liter V6?

car died while driving. No warning or anything. checked fuel pump. am getting fuel to injectors. I am not getting spark at plugs or out of the distributor. I replaced distributor and got the same results. I was told by mechanics that they suspect the crankshaft position sensor. How do I confirm this before changing? Has anyone had any similar experience.

Why won't my car start after fixing a broken serpentine belt?

Ok so first question is the starter rotating the motor like it should and it just wont start or are you turning the key without getting any results. If its not turning over id first off hit the starter solenoid with a soft hammer a few good raps may dislodge a stuck solenoid. Now if the motor is spinning but not firing up my first place id look is the distributor wiring unless it runs coil packs then i would guess that you knocked the wires off the crank sensor or maybe even broke the crank sensor. I am at a disability here not knowing what the vehicle make is., if it died while driving because belt fell off and you ran on battery till it ran out of power. ( a jump start is the ticket in that case ) Honestly im going with the crank sensor or crankshaft position sensor.being the root of your problem because if the belt broke it could easily take out the sensor as belt flew around the front of the motor. But check all your connections and research the crank sensor ..its usually a cheap and easy part to replace if its in a area where belt passes by it that makes sense as to your problem. Ok let me know a bit more info if possible. Dont give up the answer will come

No spark on a 2002 hyundai sonata?

I hate to say it but, it looks to me that timing its not adjusted as it suppose to be. These 2.4L Mitsubishi engine have a stupid design. If you don't line-up properly the timing, the engine would not fire up. Not lining up the 2 counter shafts its not so bad. Would not cause the engine not to fire up. The symptoms will be that starting with 2400 rpm's the engine will vibrate like a tractor engine. With the scanned that you have, see if you get spark from ignition. Also, if the engine is turning while cranking, you don't have a ny internal damages. As I said, it is a stupid design and the engines are known for timing belt and balance shaft belts to brake. It is the same situation with Santa FE engines, 4 Cylinders-same engine style.

So... check for spark and for timing adjust. I will update in couple of hours with more advise and technical suggestions from the shop manuals. I just have to pull out more info for you.

Good luck

**** 1st EDIT****

I have removed the timing mark image due to the fact you don't need them anymore. Check my next advise.

*****2nd EDIT******

OK. I usually don't give up so easy. Question....Is the car equiped with an immobilizer system? Some models are made to kill the spark if it is not deactivated properly. Please, Let me know. U can also e-mail me anytime at your convenience. Would be much faster to comunicate with you. Regards.

What could be wrong with a Nissan Altima that cranks but wont start?

The fuel pump fuse is blown or the fuel pump has failed. The crank position sensor has failed. Turn the key to "Run"Listen for the fuel pump to run for a few seconds then stop.If you don't hear the pump run:1) Turn the ignition key to the "Off" position and remove. Check the fuse in the engine bay fuse panel. This is a panel encased in a plastic box and usually has "FUSES" printed on the cover. Inside are high draw, high amperage fuses and relays for things like the fuel pump. Find the pump fuse, pull it and look to see if it's good. If it's blown, replace it with same amp rating fuse. Check again to see if you hear the pump run. If it does, you're lucky. Press on. Car should start. If the pump still doesn't run then see 2 below.2) If the fuse is good, then it's a good chance the pump has failed. You will have to tow the vehicle to the shop; it's dead in the water. If you hear the pump run and the car cranks but will not start, chances are it is the Crank Position Sensor (CPS). The CPS feeds info to the engine management computer telling it the crankshaft is rotating and to allow fuel flow and ignition to occur. If the computer doesn't get the CPS input, the car will not start. Again, dead in the water and a tow to the shop.Just had this experience on my '98 GMC pickup ...good pump, engine spins, no start. A flat bed ride to the local shop and ...ta-da! ...OBDII code reads CPS malfunction. Four hundred and some odd bucks later, she's up and running like a top.
