Bear Aware Course Help

What is the purpose of bear hunting?

Well for starters Bear is actually quite tasty, a bear skin rug is great to snuggle on, bear claws and teeth look great on a necklace. Bear do get over populated since they are the biggest predator in the forest the only way to cut down the population is to harvest them. They are a renewable resource and it would be a shame to see oldie bears die a slow wasteful death so we hunt them.

Black bear encounter?

You meet a black bear while stranded in a forest in North America. The bear is about 100 feet away, and has noticed you. What do you do?
I've read that you should speak softly to the bear to inform it that you are human. (Poor eyesight?) Also that you should slowly back away.

Do bears like alcohol?

I live in northern New England and like to camp a lot, mostly on campgrounds with numerous other people around, and was wondering if bears like the smell of alcohol. I know that hunters sometimes drink beer the night before the hunt so that they're body gives off a bread-like smell to which bears can smell as they have a very heightened sense of smell.
I myself prefer Vodka on ice and was wondering if I go backwoods camping will I have to be concerned with bears? I know most Vodka (cheap stuff) smells like rubbing alcohol so I was just wondering if they don't like the "chemical" type smell of it.

What is the point of saving the POLAR BEARS? (I keep seeing that ad on TV asking for donations to save them)

well what's the point of saving humans? we're doing no good to mother earth anyway; am i right?

polar bears do NOT have an instrumental value...but they have an intrinsic value, like EVERY OTHER SPECIES on this planet. instrumental means they help/contribute to the environment. intrinsic means they have their own value for being there.

and of course polar bears kill other animals, how else are they going to eat?

and why are they going extinct? uh, not exactly
"Today there are about 25,000 of the furry white critters, more than any time in the 20th century.

Meanwhile, the World Wildlife Fund found that of the 20 polar bear populations worldwide, only two are decreasing. And guess what. Those are in areas where air temperatures have fallen, not risen.

So, we’re losing bears where it’s getting cooler. Hm. Not much to blame global warming for there."

How should I hike alone in bear country with a bell without surprising bears and scaring off the other animals I photograph?

It is simple! Don't carry a bell. A lot of sources say that bells scaring bears away is more of a myth than anything.  You should note that bears typically aren't aggressive towards humans. Grizzly/Brown bears are the more aggressive sort but even they aren't much to worry about. Everything has a risk reward ratio and the risk of backpacking in bear country is pretty low. Just remember to isolate any products you carry that have odors away from your camp. This includes deoderant, soap and camera film (I think). Always wash your hands after handling meat too. If you do come across a bear, stand your ground and don't make eye contact. There's a lot of advice out there for how to handle a bear encounter. Additionally, remember never to find yourself between a mother and her cub. That can provoke an attack. If you are still worried, carry a large caliber (.45+) handgun or a can of bear spray. But seriously, don't worry about it.

What are some self-defense tips against bears?

The first and best defense is always to not be present where the threat is. That means you keep yourself aware of your situation and your surroundings, and if those change to something unsafe, you work to change those back as soon as possible. For many self-defense classes, that means when you are being attacked, your best defense is to run… except we are talking about a bear, which is a lot faster than you (35 mph running speed), loves to chase, and is the worst thing you can do.When you encounter a bear, the thing to do is calmly and carefully retreat, walking backwards quietly if the bear hasn’t noticed you, talking loudly (and calmly) if it has, yelling at it if it charges. Keep in mind that bears are generally lazy animals and usually want nothing to do with a troublesome human (unless it’s been conditioned to associate humans with free food). A bear might decide to do a false charge to drive you off.But from the way this question is posed, it sounds like the bear has attacked because it actually is being predatory. In that case, the best way to not be present where the threat is means putting something between you and the threat. I’ve heard of a bear decapitating a moose before, but a good tree is going to be a lot tougher than a moose’s neck. Being smaller than the bear means that you have less inertia than the bear, making it easier for you to make quick changes in movement. Put that tree between the two of you and keep it there. A human can outlast a bear in a trial of endurance, so even a predatory bear will eventually give up. You as a snack are just too much work for it.(If you can climb to safety, great, but remember that black bears can climb trees too, and even if it can’t climb after you, you can still end up getting treed. If help is coming, letting yourself get treed might be a good idea, but if help isn’t coming…)However, you might not have a handy tree (or boulder or whatever). In that case, when the bear charges, do as Daniel Curtis advised - make yourself look big, protect your neck with your hands, protect your face with your elbows, keep your stomach on the ground.

When hiking alone in bear country, is it smart to play music while hiking? If not, what else can I do to warn bears of my presence?

After a brown bear came to sniff around my tent in September 2013 in the middle of the night while I was in my tent camped in bear country and I was inside scared to death, I would not hike alone in bear land. Hike in a group of at least two three people, never alone. However, singing a song loudly should allow all creatures around You to hear You from quite far away and run away IF they are afraid of humans. Please notice that in some parts of our planet those animals that supposedly are considered wild they are not as wild anymore after they got in contact with humans several times and learned that humans don’t hurt them. This makes them not to be scared of humans and not to run away anymore when they see, hear or feel humans in their surroundings. This is when for humans becomes very dangerous to encounter them. For example, in the Carpathian mountains in Romania bear attacks to incautious hikers occur every year.Assuming that the area where You intend to hike is populated with bears that are naturally afraid of humans because they did not have much contact, as You may know a bear will attack You mostly when taken by surprise. On the other hand, if You hike alone in an area where the bears are familiar with humans and so are not afraid of humans anymore and a brown bear will hear You in its territory is likely will come straight towards You to attack You. And will not joke; will be very serious :)Bears are not animals to be warned of our presence. Bears are animals not to mess with. If You intend to hike on a trail in bear land, then either You take a firearm with You if You intend to go alone, either You hike together with other people, never alone or defenseless.Adriano

What would be the best course of action for domestic violence victims so law enforcement and the court are aware of abuse with narcissistic personality disorder, so calculating no one would believe a victim?

Domestic Violence victims should record all times that the abuse has taken place. If there is violence, well, that leaves marks, cuts, bruising, abrasions etc etc etc not to mention the Physical evidence from the aggressor on the victim like DNA.I would suggest your neighbours can help you there too. If he threatens you, shouts, smashes things up etc etc they will have heard all that. I bet your voice sounds different to his through the walls.Scenario : Imagine it is YOUR neighbour that is going through this. If the Cops called on your door and asked you to tell them what you heard I bet you would be able to distinguish between the aggressive party against the crying abused person. One of those voices would drown out the other and be angry or aggressive so you would be able to offer evidence regarding WHO was the likely aggressor. Bear in mind the Cop has already been to the house where the problem is and all you would be doing is supporting what the Cop already knows.DO SOMETHING even if it is just making that call. You will get the ball rolling and make someone elses life a whole lot better.
