I'm currently still in my senior year of high school and I'm still trying to figure out what to do. Iv always wanted to be a chp canine unit. I love driving especially fast I love guns(not trying to sound like a bad *** just been shooting whole life) and I have a real great relationship with animals mostly dogs. I'm in decent shape I'm a fast runner I'm not too big I'm about 5"9 145lbs if any of that matters. I just want to know from experienced highway patrolmen and women how it is being a officer and if you could go back would you choose this career again. Also f you are in the canine unit or just know about it how does one become a canine unit. Thx guys serious answers only please I don't want the fake *** reasonjust your honest opinions and experiences in the force. I oppretiat it a lot guys and thx again.

Does the California highway patrol have a k-9 unit?

I can tell you in at least some CHP Areas, no, they don't or there are very few. For example in San Diego (Border Dispatch Center), they use SDPD's canine officers. They may have specialized units like bomb sniffing dogs but that would be for the CHP's protective role (They guard the Governor).

They may also have some drug dogs. But dog functions are very specialized. For apprehension (biting) dogs, they may find it more cost effective to work with local departments.
