How do I recover a lost vehicle title, if I've moved to a new state and car is no longer registered?

This one is pretty crazy...I hope someone has an answer! I recently moved from New Mexico to Nebraska. My vehicle registration just recently expired this last month (it was registered with the state of New Mexico). Now, I would like to register my car in Nebraska. Can't find my car title anywhere, I may have lost it in the move. When I paid the car off (it was right around the time during the move), I did not contact DMV in New Mexico to inform that the title was now in my name. So, presumably, it still shows that it is registered as the Car Company being the leinholder.

1.) What sort of problems will I face trying to register a car in one state, when it's no longer registered in another?

2.) Can i obtain a vehicle title from New Mexico even though my car registration just recently expired?

3.) Am I going to encounter any problems obtaining the title since I never informed DMV that there had been a transfer of ownership from the Leinholder to myself once i paid the car off?

Answers to all or some would help. Hopefully someone who has worked at the DMV! Thanks

What can i do if dealer hasn't gotten my plates yet!?

Well first off, If you purchased your car from a New or Used car dealer, they can & will get you your plates. If you financed the vehicle they HAVE to get the plates so as to make sure the lien is posted on the title, etc. Now, you didn't tell anyone what State your in so I can not give you your States regulations as they pertain to dealers. For Instance in MOST States a dealer CAN NOT sell a car "As Is" Also, I don't now of any state that gives a "Paper Plate-or temp for 20 Days. On that I may be wrong. I can only Assume that , by what the dealer told you about being an "Out of State vehicle" That he doesn't have a Title yet. Maybe he didn't''t get It yet because he had to try and obtain a Duplicate because the prior owner lost It. Or the Lien had to be paid off and therefore the title hasn't been sent to the dealer as of yet. As you can see there are a whole bunch of reason's. Your remedy would be contacting the Motor Vehicle Department in your State OR contacting the agency that governs new & Used car Dealers. Here In this State, NY the DMV governs the dealers activities. Here you would call the consumer hot line and open a complaint. At least at that time the DMV would make sure you have a new "Paper tag" so you don't have the vehicle impounded or worse. (Worse being you arrested because you don't have paperwork showing you own the vehicle and didn't steal it)Good Luck in this venture and try and give someone your State and the information so as to try and help you.

How do I get my title for my car when it was sent to the wrong address?

When you buy a car the dealer has to sign the title over to you and then you have to go to the dmv and apply for a new title and give them that title. You are supposed to notify the dmv of any address changes, not the dealer, because it is the dmv that issues your title. And when you buy a car they have to give you the title right then and there, they are not supposed to mail it anywhere. When I bought my car and my mom hers we had to sign the previous titles as the new owners and they took the paperwork to the dmv for us and the dmv later mailed the title to us. You need to contact the dmv and find out if a new title was issued for your car. You will need to have the vin, year and make for your car. Have them verify the address and send you out a new title. You might have to pay for a duplicate because you were supposed to notify them of any change. Good luck!!

I got a new car but I still haven't received my license plate and my 30 days have passed. What can I do until ?

If you are in a state where the dealership takes care of the registration for you, call the dealership. They should be able to issue you another temporary tag until your plates are ready. If you went to the DMV and registered it yourself, go to the DMV and ask after your plates and if you can get another temp tag until they come in. Don't just drive around with the expired tag...you can and will get pulled over. I would carry your Bill of Sale with you until you get your plates, proving that you've just recently purchased the vehicle.

How long does it take for the California DMV to replace a lost pink slip?

Why do you want one? You can transfer the vehicle without waiting for a replacement title.Use Reg 227 and check the box that says “Transfer of title with duplicate or paperless title.” When you complete section 3, the document immediately acts as a new title instrument. You can then use section 4 to release interest. Give the buyer the 227 as well as a bill of sale and odometer statement. Some complications:The buyer will be stuck paying the lost title fee (about $20). You should advise the buyer in advance and probably compensate for this expense. If the original title instrument listed a lienholder (legal owner), you’ll need a release of interest from that entity (section 5).If your address on record for the vehicle was not current (ugh, you shouldn’t let that happen), see the instructions in section 3.

CA. DMV. Unusualy long delay in receiving my title.?

In october 2008 I purchased a used 2003 motorcycle from a private party. The motorcycle only had 3,000 miles on it, and was originaly purchased new by the party selling it.
When I got home, my wife noticed that the mileage on the original title was higher than the mileage entered on the bill of sale.
I checked with the original dealership that sold the bike. They reported to CA. DMV that the mileage was 7 miles. DMV screwed up, and entered the original selling price of 17,XXX into the mileage box.
So when I went to register the bike that had only 3,000 miles on it, DMV sees the original title showing 17,XXX miles.
Eventhough this is a clerical error on DMV's part, I've been waiting over three months for the new title. I was also told by DMV that I cannot sell the bike until I receive the title. Also, no one at DMV would tell me how far along in the process my title is, or when I will receive it.
Is there any recourse or other action I can take.
Thank you.

What happens if a car dealer sells a car that they don't have a title for?

Car dealers are legally prohibited from selling vehicles for which they don’t have titles. If they are caught doing this, the penalties run anywhere from fines to the loss of their dealer license to arrest for dealing in stolen property. Since their dealer’s license is more valuable to them to them than the few dollars that they’ll make selling an untitled vehicle, the overwhelming majority will simply send into the state to obtain a title within a week to ten days and then sell the car.if you somehow purchase a vehicle from a dealer who doesn’t have the title, you should return it within the 72 hour limit that you have to rescind the purchase and demand that the dealer provide you with a title or that he refund your money.

Why is he still holding my license plates hostage?

Since both names are on the title, both parties will have to sign off on any ownership transfer...even from both existing owners to one of those people.
You need to get your attorney involved.
